Easy and sturdy

I grabbed onto a towel rack to break a stumble and managed to pull one side out of the wall. I am in no way a handy person. Pretty hard (and expensive) to find a handyman in our area. This product worked very well. Easy well written instructions and includes everything you need. I needed to enlarge the hole (used a hacksaw blade I already owned) as the hole was too small to fit the plastic patch through the existing hole. Took about 10 minutes to repair. After drying for 1 1/2 days, I sanded and painted. Drilled a 1/2” hole to accommodate the toggle anchor. The repaired area feels sturdier than the original drywall. Saved me a $100 visit for a handyman. I admire my work every time I look at it! Read more

Awesome kit for a beginner or veteran

Birfield85May 28, 2019✓ Verified purchase

I was filling in a phone mount (who has a landline anymore?) and I have no experience with drywall. I was looking into these complicate deals with wire mesh, tape, etc and then found this and decided to give it a shot. It worked great! First, the kit says the surface needs to be clean and dust free. I did what I could but with all the insulation, etc in there it wasn't perfect by any means. I did use a razor to trim so of the ragged edges. The 3M backpiece still stuck and held very easily. You can break pieces off to adjust the size which is nice since one side of my hole was against a stud so I wanted to make that side shorter. Next, I filled it with the provided filler. This stuff is amazing! I've used basic spackle before and this is much easier to work with and just fill the entire hole. The tip of doing a final pass with the putty knife being wet helped a lot too. It took less than a minute to fill and smooth the hole. I also only used about half of the container and had plenty left that I used to fill other little holes/dings around the house. It did dry very fast and the next day was easy to sand down and make it smooth. It's worth noting that mine is going behind backsplash so I didn't care about texture but you'd have to get a separate texture kit if you wanted it to match a textured wall. This will be smooth. Overall, easy as pie, took no time at all, made me a lifelong fan of 3M filler products and I'd definitely buy it again. It included everything I needed from the back panel, spackle, putty knife and sandpaper. Read more

Easy to use

My son tripped and fell and his knee went into the wall. Since he made the hole I had him help me fix the hole. We ordeed this kit and followed the instructions. The only obstacles we ran into along the way was the adhesive on the grid was not strong enough to attach to the inside of the wall. We ended up using super glue and that worked. Once we got the grid attached it took a little trial and error but we got the mud to stick to the grid and start to build up so we could bring it flush with the wall. We did one coat and let that dry overnight. In the morning we sanded it and did a little bit more touching up. In the evening we sanded again and then painted. In the final picture the paint is still a little bit wet. Since this is at the bottom of the wall in a low traffic area of the house, we didn't bother to add texture. I don't think anyone will notice. I would recommend this kit. If a mom and her 13-year-old can do it then I think anyone can. Read more

Great Product! Does Everything it Promises.

This product, like most 3M products, does everything it says. If you follow the instructions it is hard to mess up. It formed a perfectly smooth repair. The "Fiber Reinforced Spackling Compound" that is included patches the hole very well. The fibers keep the compound from shrinking and cracking when it dries. I am going to try to find more of this and use it for all my similar smaller repairs. The design of the backing board that you insert inside the hole is ingenious. My hole was right next to a wall stud but because I could snap off part of the backing board there was no problem. I even peeled off the adhesive tape from the part I broke off and reapplied it to areas of the remaining backing board to give it extra adhesion on the back of the sheetrock. Again, following the instructions on preparing the inside of the wall is very important. I highly recommend this product for all of the DIY homeowners out there. Read more

A professional painter suggested I use this and it is an amazing product. Goes on smooth, dries fast and very white color. I’ll use this over normal spackling from now on. Read more

Worked great filling a huge ceiling hole

K. MuiMay 11, 2020✓ Verified purchase

I had to patch a ~4" hole in a concrete ceiling (skim coated, no actual dry wall paneling). For a hole this big, I probably should have made a plug out of scrap drywall, but instead, I tried to fill it in slowly by building up layers with joint compound. That was a beginner's mistake; It took way too long to build up and drips out before it dries. The compound in this repair kit has a lot of embedded fibers, which makes it more like clay than regular compound. I couldn't use the plastic backer from the kit, but it stuck well enough onto another metal plate I installed and had no worries about it falling out. It also hardened without cracking or shrinking noticeably. I opted to make the patch slightly concave and went over again with regular joint compound, just to ensure the surface texture was consistent. After sanding and painting, I totally can't figure out where the hole used to be. Very easy to use for someone with no experience, and the result was basically equivalent to what I would have expected from a contractor. Only downside was cost; Maybe not worth it for real pros, but makes sense for DIYers. Read more

Great compound but the repair plate needs better adhesion

AminApril 30, 2022✓ Verified purchase

The compound is really good and effective. It has fibers in it which helps with the adhesion and dries fast. The putty knife is noticeably bigger than the compuond container and it is a bit hard to spread the compound evenly on the knife. The adhesion on the repair plate is not very good and you might need to use extra glue for that. I used a metal mesh instead of the repair plate and it worked pretty good. The compound is enough for at least 5 repairs of 5" holes in my opinion. Overall, I think it is a good product but you might need to get a metal mesh instead of the repair plate that is included.
