★★★☆☆

Very hurtful to trapezius.

WayneChicagoJune 9, 2016

The straps are too narrow, both in width of the strap itself, and in placement on the shoulders. I debated this vest versus the 40 lb. V-Force short vest. I'm 5'9" and 175 lbs and fairly trim, weight training work out 4-5 times per week, with some hiking and inline skating. I knew from online research that weight vests are all going to be uncomfortable on the shoulders with use; that I was expecting. I use mine for adding weight to Farmer's Walks, Chins and Pull-ups, dumbbell calf raises, etc. Only a few of my exercises are overhead, but, as that was what this was meant for, I thought I'd try it out. I have medium width shoulders, and wear a size 40 regular suit jacket. Well, the issue here is that, not only are the straps narrower than the standard model (these 2.25" wide versus 3.25" wide on standard, as I recall; check me on that), the straps sit higher on the collarbones. Look at the photo--the straps rest right on the "meat" of the trapezius muscles. If it was with more spread, that is the U-neck was wider, then they could be closer to my acromio-clavicular joints (yet not right on them) and may be more comfortable. Note: I have never tried the Standard version to know, only this version. The chest strap, even when tight, adds little to the support of the entire vest once one is moving. Bottom line, I think this is not a great vest for overhead activities because of the fit issues. Maybe, just maybe, if someone is wicked thin, like a tall and gangly fellow, this might be okay on them and the straps hit right, and maybe for them the wider standard straps would fall off the edges of their shoulders, I don;t know. But for average build people, especially if they have some traps (yes, I do my shrugs), this is going to catch your "meat". Wearing it fully loaded at 40 pounds for over 10 minutes is excruciating. Sure, one can take it off between sets but, honestly, until you've donned and doffed a weight vest, you might not appreciate that it's quite different than removing a dinner jacket. I would not buy this particular model again, although I would buy this brand. Note: the construction is impeccable, and this is clearly the best weight vest available. It's just hard to order without trying it on (and I did contact the company by phone before ordering to go over my needs and was instructed that this is the models to get). I am considering wearing BMX shoulder pads to better distribute the weight, or, at the very least, will add closed-cell foam padding underneath each strap. I have no clue if the standard version would be better for me. I have no idea if this quirky fit is just on my body, although I think I'm a pretty normal fit build. Few other reviews on Amazon mention the pain from the straps, yet even the customer service rep at WeightVest home told me, by phone, that is the compromise for improved overhead range of motion: some potential strap pain. If you search the online forums, others mention the pain, too. I can only speak to the fact that I will not be playing basketball in this thing. lol. I know it's a tough decision to know which model to buy since we can't try them on in person, and returning a 40# leaded weight vest is going to cost a small fortune. So, I wanted to give some measurements (mine) that might help someone out there. It's a great vest when I use smaller weights in it (eg 15# I can wear for 30 minutes or more). Additionally, if one is doing horizontal exercises, such as push ups, the pain is minimal as the weight is now through one's back. Read more

Easy to put on

robj462October 4, 2015

This vest is extremely well made and you can see how it will last a while. Easy to put on, fasten and to subtract weights from. One thing that's a little weird; when you get it, it looks like the logo is screwed up or damaged, like maybe the vest is a return or something. But when you take a closer look on the company web site, you see that it's intentional. Also, when you fasten it snugly, it does restrict your breathing slightly. I would recommend for someone who is new to weight vests to start out with 10 or 15 lbs and build from there. 40lbs is too jarring to your body initially. High quality product. Read more
