nicely made unit , with 3 of "18650" type quality device rechargeable lithium's cells provided

AWESOME LITTLE media box can handle most codec , but not all movies and music is best use for downloaded you tube and other content at 37 bucks its a bargain if a little primitive and processor seems average screen is bright comes with 3 18650 3.7 volt batteries it can recharge .. the same cells in some laptops and other devices ... look like giant double AA size is in the name 18mm wide65mm long "O" to denote cylinder shape = 18650 nice build sensibly like the shape of a quality radio from 1990s but with a 4 inch screen for video \movies clear and louder than expected, but not stereo, even has an old school metal telescoping antenna for radio reception ,which add to the charm Read more

Cool little machine

jesseMarch 10, 2026✓ Verified purchase

Works great, their are a couple of issues with it, the length of videos seems to have a upper limit, somewhere around 2 hours I believe. It doesn't play every mp4 video, I was using HandBreak to convert the videos, the Amazon fire 720p30 preset does the trick. I got it for a white noise machine, found out really long videos like 3, 6, or 8 hours will not play, but you can loop videos, so its fine. Placing videos into a folder will make the videos play in sequence. anyways, works great, uses 18650 batteries so that's a plus. Read more

Edit: Not perfect but not bad either

D. GundersonNovember 26, 2025✓ Verified purchase

Edit: After playing with this for 60 days and getting to understand the quirks a little better, I’m dropping my rating from four stars to three stars. Why? The manufacturer improved the basic design when the next generation model (the seven inch version called the SM616) came out. If you’re going to take the plunge, pay the extra money for the SM616 model as it is much better designed. Initial review: Where do I start? This looks like just the right item to have if you are camping or weathering out the storm in a shelter. Actually it is ideal in any living situation where you don’t have space for a dedicated media system. Think old folks home or shared living quarters here. Foremost, it is an AM/FM/SW radio. It is an MP3 player. But wait, there’s more…it’s also a Video media player. An added bonus…it’s also a mono Bluetooth speaker. Now…what would you pay? All of this portable goodness for less than $50 USD… Of course, I had to try this out. The manufacturer stated 128GB storage memory size maximum. I’m pretty sure that they thought about the stability of a smaller memory card. I thought that I’d try using a 256GB card and a 256GB USB thumb drive. Guess what? Both memories worked without any issues. Edit: Stick with a smaller size media card. The unit is unstable using a larger size card even though it can accommodate it. Also avoid using both the TF and USB media ports. The player takes time to boot up and using both ports makes the startup process that much longer. In the long run, you’re better off using the Micro Compact Flash card only. Now about the media card or the USB stick: The trick is to have them formatted as FAT32. (use Ridgecrop’s GUIFORMAT program for this). Pushing my luck - I tried using 512GB media expecting the unit to crash. I was shocked to see that the unit accepting that much storage media. I literally had close to 1TB of files stored and the unit still handled it without any problems. The trick here is to give the radio time to startup without inputting key presses. When it comes up, it (in my case) starts playing MP3 files as that was the first thing that was written to the Micro CF card, as the CF card is the first memory detected. No problem, pressing ‘Return’ takes you back to the main menu where you can make your selection. I would like to mention as a Caveat: Copy your files in different directories (or as categories). I created dozens of different directories in my CF and USB memories. Audio files had their storage according to the Artist’s names in Directories A to Z. Videos and Movies in directories based on type. Comedy, Drama, SciFi and so on. With thousands of Audio files and hundreds of movies, it’s better using the ‘Browser’ function to navigate using the directories. The Browser is much like the File Explorer utility in Windows. I’ve included some photos to illustrate this. The Menu System can be accessed when playing both music and videos. You can fine tune your settings from there. As for the Radio? It’s okay but not the unit’s strong suit, as stated elsewhere in these reviews. Edit: I tested both the SM617 and the SM616 radio sections and the FM on the SM616 was superior. The speaker volume is okay and sounds good. It’s a decent MP3 player. Don’t expect it to support Meta Tag Data or playlists. If you want to make playlists, put the music in different directories (playlist1, playlist2, etc) The best method here is to have your playlists on separate CF cards. Both the radio and MP3 sections can best be explained as spartan (adequate but not fancy). Let’s talk about the main ability of this media player which is the video section. As disclosed by the manufacturer: the player only works with video files encoded for 720p. Everybody I know of has their movies encoded to something higher than that on their home media systems. You have to re-encode existing files down to 720p and that could be a game breaker for most. Some other reviewers have stated how they did this transition. In my own case I used the HandBrake utility. This worked out great as HandBrake can do Batch processing of multiple files. I could convert two dozen movies in an unattended overnight session. The next morning I would have the 720p versions in a target directory. Once I got the hang of it, the process was painless. I should note that you can downgrade the quality of the encoding to save space on the final file as the small screen size on the player hides any encoding anomalies. The video section of the radio is a winner in my book. I didn’t notice any issues with play back jitter or any video anomalies. The only real issue with movies is that the average audio level is lower than the radio section level or MP3 player level. I attribute that to the audio levels in the movie encoding. It would have been nice if one of the Menu selections of the video player could have included an audio Equalizer or audio booster function. This would have been great. Like I said. The unit isn’t perfect but isn’t bad either. The supplied manual was insufficient to understand some aspects of this media radio player. It took a little fidgeting with the menus to figure things out that the manual didn’t cover too well. For the price point, well worth the money. Edit: As someone who has owned both the SM617 and SM616, I’d recommend the SM616 which is a more refined version of this model. Read more
