These are so good in their structural feeling and thickness beyond most plastic glasses of this type (and I've had a bunch), that it pains me to only give 4 stars, but here is the issue: The textured "hammered" pattern is on the inside of the glass, not the outside. Typically, well, always based on three other sets I've had of this size and type (plastic, hammered finish), the texture is on the outside, and the inside is smooth. Here, the outside is smooth and the inside is textured. This is an issue for a few reasons: 1 - the textured inside, which includes a textured bottom on the inside, means cleaning is not as straightforward, especially where the bottom inside meets the bottom...it's nooks and crannies meeting nooks and crannies and it means more careful cleaning. 2 - the smooth outside is more slippery than the textured outside; it takes a more concerted effort to hold, like a pint glass for beer. 3 - the tactile sensation of holding a smooth glass vs the textured one is very unsatisfying. Whoever says this pint glass feels great? No one, ever. But if you're holding a glass which has texture and it doesn't interfere with the experience it can be a big bonus. And the hammered finish is tailor made to settle into your finger pads and just seat itself there securely and satisfyingly with grip. For all that, I can't give 5 stars. But these are AWESOME. Why? Because they're so much more STURDY than the similar sets I've had which have had thinner walls. The pictures show the thickness differences as well as the smooth vs textured inside and outside between the new translucent gray (I call it smoke) colored glasses and an old yellow one. The picture of them laying side-by-side looks more elongated than they are (camera distortion). There is a functional benefit to the thicker glass: getting ice and water from a through-the-door service in a refrigerator. Especially for the streamlined fridges where you push against a panel, not a lever. That constant push can strain the glass over time and create vertical striations which lead to leaks. These are so sturdy. And not one arrived with a crack or defect. I'm using them. My favorite color in this area is emerald green, I never get tired of seeing it and it looks great behind a glass cabinet, but you can't have everything, so sturdy, smoke-colored, smooth exterior, textured interior glasses it is.
