Rather Good For It's Price

I got this sub to replace the cheap one I got when I bought an audio receiver. The old one was only 8". This 10" is obviously better. But I was torn between this sub and the Polk Audio sub. I choose this one since so many people says that it has features the other doesn't. And I'm VERY pleased with this choice. There is one thing I LOVED about this sub I have to say something about. This sub does have the single plug cable input. Which works for new receivers. It can't be directly hooked up using Positive/Negative cable. BUT, it can be hooked up another way if you only have a receiver with a Positvie/Negative sub output. You can run the speaker wires that go to your left and right speakers, to this sub and then to the speakers. Which does require some extra cable wire. You can do this with your front or back speakers. It picks up the frequencey from those wires and performs like a normal sub. I experienced no loss in quility from the speakers that were ran through the sub. And this sub doesn't have to be on for the speakers, that are ran through it, to work. This also gives you the option to hook up one to three (four if you have 7.1) to your audio receiver. If you want to. I don't now why you would but to each their own. Me, I decided to keep my old sub hooked up since the line out for the sub on the receiver has the Positive/Negative output. Then I hooked up this sub using the back surround sound speakers. So this sub covers up what the other sub can't. Plus I now can get bass that can shake things off the wall without having to strain one sub. The sub also has a volume and Hz knob to adjust to your taste. With this sub I find that if you put the volume on the sub at max, it looses a significant amount of clear sound and then becomes just a lound boom. Half way it sounds wonderful. There is also an option for it to go on standby/sleep mode. The light on the front will turn red and will go into this mode when there is no frequencey detected. There is a power button on the back left bottom part of the sub. I turn it on and off this way which I can see to be annoying for some people. Otherwise the sleep mode can take care of that. But I've heard that in sleep mode it can sometimes make a buzzing noise that can be nuisance. Read more

Best Subwoofer for the price!

ChawdyJanuary 20, 2012✓ Verified purchase

I've had this Sony Subwoofer for about 2 years now and it's still going strong and sounding great. I bought this sub to complete a home theater system that I bought piece by piece. I first bought a Sony STR-DH500 5.1-Channel A/V Receiver (Black) , which is great, has tons of connection possibilities, and has plenty of power. There's a newer model out now for this receiver which is probably comprable to the older one. I then purchased a set of Sony SS-F6000 Floorstanding 4-Way Speakers (Pair, Black) , which are awesome. Those really put out some high quality sound and have plenty of power left to make your ears bleed. I would recommend those for someone who's on a budget but doesn't want to sacrifice quality. I finished up the set with a Sony SS-CN5000 Dual Center Channel Speaker (Each, Black) . Again, this speaker is great. Solid sound, high quality. Now back to the sub. It's a 100-watt sub that will fill out any sound system with thundering bass. The 10" woofer will give you all the bass you need. It has a switch that will let the sub "sleep" if no signal is being fed to it and will "wake" it up when it receives a signal. You can set the phase, cut off frequency, and volume output on the back of the sub. I have this system set up in "man cave" and have to turn the sub off when it's late, otherwise my roommates will complain about the noise. It will shake the walls during action films if you have it turned up. I gave it 5 stars for meeting my expectations, quality (Sony), customization, sound output, and most importantly, VALUE. There's a reason it's been a best seller on Amazon for years. If you are looking for a great sub for a cheap price, then this is the one. Again, this sub comes highly recommended! Read more

New to surround sound, producing good bass

austin_LarryNovember 5, 2010✓ Verified purchase

I just created my first 5.1 surround sound with the Onkyo TX-SR308 5.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black) and other Sony speakers. This has worked very well producing a pleasing amount of bass in a fairly compact and definitely attractive package at a good price. There are just a few adjustment options in back, but you are going to want to pay attention to them and experiment with them because they will make a big difference. There is a back adjustment for sound volume that helps match the bass output to your liking with yoour other speakers. You will also want to experiment with the crossover frequency. And you have a choice to reverse phase or not, but after a lot of listening it really didn't make much of a difference to me which phase I set it on. You also have a choice to use auto shut-off. Some people claimed that using this when it does go off, when it reactivates it will lag to turn back on. I didn't find this to be an issue, and could not hear any lag or certainly nothing beyond maybe the first sound of a movie. My receiver is not super powerful and this provides enough bass, for my 14 by 16 open room quite easily. If you need a bigger bass though you probably are looking at a 12 inch or more. For the size and price, cannot complain at all. At the end of the day it is laying down clean, hard bass that compliments the rest of my speakers well. Read more
