Amana RFS12TS Medium Duty Stainless Steel Commercial Microwave with Push Button Controls - 120V 1200W

The previous positive reviewer was spot on. I was unable to order this microwave through Amazon because they would not ship to Hawaii, but ordered it through another vendor. After using it for a month I am totally impressed. I have had consumer microwave ovens that are cheaply built and lasted less than a year. This Amana is tough, well built, and with the 1200W cooking power you have to adjust the times way down from normal 700W microwave recipes. Yes you have to change your normal receptacle out to the 20Amp plug. Most kitchen wiring is on a 20A circuit, but check your circuit breaker panel to verify your kitchen has a 20A breaker. This is a commercial microwave, unfortunately there is not a consumer version. So there is a warranty concern. But the Amana I left in my old house has worked well for several years. So when I discovered that another brand of microwave installed in my new home leaked (microwaves), I decided to by another commercial Amana. Here are the advantages: (1) this unit has rotating antennas instead of rotating food. It also has one on the top AND one on the bottom. So it cooks evenly without the rotating platter; (2) the door is easy to open by lifting the handle, and easy to close. No button to push in to open, no slamming to close; (3) it is a substantial unit, with a stainless steel exterior and interior sides; (4) It is simple to operate, you just press one of the 10 programmed cooking times, then 20%, 50% or 70% button if you don't want full power. Or you can enter the a cooking time; (5) you can program how it beeps when the cooking ends, the max cooking time for safety, and other cooking features. Here are the disadvantages :(1) it requires a 20 amp circuit and receptacal. Many kitchens have a 20 amp circuit, but you may need to switch the receptacal; (2) it does not have a temperature gauge and other standard cooking features; (3) only has 4 power levels (instead of the normal ten); (4) the price. We ordered this for our kitchen even tho it is the commercial model (RFS12TS) .We have plenty of air circulation around it so not worried about malfunctioning. It is a large simple easy to clean interior. But the fan runs for one minute after you remove heated item and close door. We are getting used to it. I bought this microwave to replace an old Quasar oven that served me well for over 30 years.The Quasar was rugged, solid, built like a tank. All of the modern, consumer-grade ovens I looked at -- even high-end brands like Kitchen Aid, Viking, and DCS -- seemed flimsy by comparison, an impression bolstered by numerous online reviews complaining about their lack of durability. I wanted something that was going to last more than a year or two, and figured a commercial-grade microwave would be more likely to meet that requirement. Time will tell... I do have a few initial observations, though, that may be of interest to prospective buyers: First, this oven is not warranted by the manufacturer for residential use. This means if anything goes wrong with it -- even if only a week after you buy it -- you'll have to pay to have it fixed (unless you can work something out with Amazon). Second, the unit's electrical plug does not fit into a standard 3-prong, 120-volt outlet. You'll have to have an electrician install a dedicated 20-amp circuit with a 20-amp outlet, or buy a 20-amp plug adapter and hope it doesn't trip a breaker if you plug it into a standard outlet. Third, the unit is very noisy. A loud fan comes on as soon as the door is opened even if you don't actually activate the oven, and the fan stays on a minute or two after the door is closed or an operating cycle is completed. Fourth, the unit is very heavy (64 lbs) despite it's relatively compact size. You'll need a hand truck to move it and two people to lift it into position. Fifth, it does not have a rotating carousel as most modern ovens do, nor does it have any of the bells and whistles (e.g., temperature probe, moisture sensor, automatic defrost, pre-programmed cooking cycles, time-of-day clock, etc.) of consumer models. Sixth, it's very powerful. Even its lowest power setting is too potent just to keep something warm, which means you can't use it to hold something at serving temperature (e.g., a bowl of mashed potatoes) after it's cooked. Update (October, 2014) -- As I mentioned in my original review above, the main reason I spent almost $1000 on a countertop microwave oven was with the hope of having a rugged, durable appliance that would provide many years of trouble free operation. Well, after less than six months of light use in my home kitchen, it's broken. The cooling fan seized dramatically -- with a lot of popping, sizzling noises and the odor of burnt electrical insulation.
