I've been wanting a larger chair mat for my desk area at work, and this mat was close enough to the dimensions I was hoping for that I gave it a chance. I should note that my previous experience with chair mats has been with mats I have purchased directly at a store and they came flat. This mat arrived rolled up in a tall box. The plastic is a similar thickness to my previous chair mats, and while more supple than my previous mats, it is still quite stiff. It was kind of a struggle to get it unrolled by myself, and get it (more or less) flat onto the floor. I then let it sit overnight with a small bookshelf sitting on each end, and hoped that would be enough to flatten it completely. When I arrived back at work the following day, the mat was definitely flatter, but still bowed in the middle and almost looked rippled. I decided to let it sit under the bookcases another day. After 40-45 hours flattened by bookcases, it seemed flat enough to move to my desk area, though it still looked a little "rippled." I noticed the underside of my mat was dirty and looked like it had streaks of a white liquid had dried on it. But whatever was on it wiped off easily with a damp towel. Now that it is in place at my desk, here are my observations. The mat is placed on top of the extremely low-pile industrial carpet that can be found in many classrooms. This mat is slightly more supple than my previous chair mats, and I can feel the difference in sturdiness on the carpet, even though the carpet is not soft. The suppleness may not be noticeable when the mat is on hard flooring, such as tile, laminate, wood, or concrete. My chair still rolls smoothly over it, but I can see the potential for divots from my chair's wheels to form in the mat over time. Also because the underside of the mat is smooth, unlike some mats that have the small "spike" that poke into carpet, I do find that the mat shifts out of place under my desk. I don't notice it moving in the moment because the movement is more gradual, but I do have to move my chair off of it and then reposition the mat back into place every few days. While I got the mat primarily to help my chair roll more smoothly on the carpet, this mat would also do an excellent job of floor protection. Despite the difficulty flattening the mat, and the smooth underside allowing it to "migrate" under my desk, this is still a pretty decent mat and is more reasonable priced than a lot of other brands. The more expensive mats do often have additional features (thicker/stiffer, better grip to the floor), but this Amazon Basics chair mat does seem to be a good value and a lower price point, so helpful for students, teachers, home businesses, and anyone else that needs a basic chair mat at a budget-friendly price. Terrible. It came in a box all rolled up in a small box and impossible to unfurl. And came with no suction cups to have it stick to the floors. Because of this, the product is unusable and a total waste of money because I can't even unroll it to flatten it out enough to even place the chair on it. I would need nothing less than 3 people to unroll it, then flatten it out, then hard staple it to the tiles before I could even place the chair on it. Unusable and a waste of $40! Terrible.
