I have yet to have an aquarium vacuum that is perfect but do appreciate the easy cleaning of this one...Not sure about the knob in that on one hand, it gives you better control of the suction but on the other, a switch is easier to use and I've not really had a problem with too much suction with a switch. I have a small tank so I can't really speak to the speed -- all my vacs have been faster than what I did in the old days: i.e. stir up the gravel and let the filter clean the water. Vacs are much kinder to the fish (I think) but then some of them swim in ponds which are pretty mucky. Can't speak to the longevity of the filter -- will update this review if it seems to give out in too short an amount of time. But it functions well and is a good size -- not too huge for my tank - but could definitely reach the bottom of most well-sized ones. Cleaning speed seems fine but the key is if you clean regularly (1x week), it shouldn't take you very long. Don't know how long it would take if you let the waste really build up. The media could not be loaded. I’ve been really happy with this electric gravel cleaner. It works very well and is much more convenient than my old gravity-fed siphon for water changes and routine tank cleaning. I like that the suction can be easily adjusted with the dial-style control, which makes it simple to customize the suction power depending on the power of flow I need. The attachments are handy, letting me vacuum the bare bottom of my quarantine tank as well as the gravel or sand in my other tanks. I also like that the cleaner has a built-in screen and filter to keep the water clean. This way, I have the option to filter the water directly back into the tank if I’m just removing leftover food or debris, or into an external container if I’m deep cleaning my sand bed. The two-piece handle makes it easy to adjust the cleaner’s length for different tank depths, keeping my hands out of the water. IMPORTANT: Make sure to lift the partitioned foam insert and get the hose from under it before you start. Overall, I really like this cleaner—it makes maintaining my tanks faster, easier, and far less of a hassle. Read more

It's a good entry level electric siphon, cleaner and vacuum, with a few caveats. I've been in the hobby since the 1970's, and started out old school with a hose and some physics! These electric pumps are great. I'm happier with the one I already had as far as quiet motor and speed. This one's slower, noisier, and overheated a couple of times just filling up my 50 gallon tank from a bucket of filtered water. Only part way through a 50% water change, so it wasn't being pushed unreasonably. Probably started at about 20% filled, and kept stopping. I had to switch to my old one. It will suck sand up, as they all do, so these are best for gravel only. If you have fry and shrimp, you'll want to use a manual syphon in your substrate where the might be hiding, even though this has a small plastic grate in front. You can use the siphon to suck out water in the middle of the tank though, where your little creatures aren't. I'd say this would be okay for very light duty work in smaller tanks. Maybe 20-30 gallons. It's a shame because it's slimmer and easier to maneuver around plants, etc., and the hose is FANTASTIC. Supple and so much better than any others that usually come with these. I really wanted to like this and I was excited to get it. I already have a large syphon system that I use for water changes, but I wanted to use this for spot cleaning. The suction is so poor that I can have some diatrus right in front of the tube and it's difficult to get it sucked up. The filter chambers stay filled with air which is part of the problem. Also don't try to clean your sand, it will pull that right up into the fine mesh filter. But the biggest problem is the leaking connection at the outlet chamber just under the handle. Overall this is a very good pump. When I first tested it the smaller filter kept popping off, then I realized the outlet hose had a kink causing the pressure to build up, so make sure you don't have any kinks. I only have a 1.5 gallon tank so I had to ditch the pre-filter and just use one tube extension for it to fit without being too bulky but I only have stones so that wasn't an issue for me. It pumped well and was adjustable with the dial. Flow was good for my small tank up to about half power. It's also nice that once the flow is going you can shut off the motor and it will keep gravity feeding. I do wish it had a trigger for on off since it can be tricky finding the dial when you're in the middle of it. Also while the hose clip worked perfectly for attaching to my bucket it didn't hold tight to my tank wall. I had to fold up a piece of paper and slide it in between for a snug fit. So again overall a good pump with lots of attachments. Read more
