Any item like this is no substitute for adult supervision... That being said, I am very satisfied that I bought this item (for $8.24), would buy it again if mine broke for some reason, and would happily recommend it as a gift. I agree with all the listed product features but I reordered them based on my priorities: 1. Alerts you with an audible alarm if the water is too hot (>100.4 F / 38 C) or if the water is too cold (<89.6 F/ 32 C) as a reminder to keep the water temperature in a comfortable range 2. Reads bath temperature and updates the digital display (in F and C) every 2 seconds (although rapidly updates, remember to account for a gradient from a running faucet) 3. Makes a fun floating toy as well (green smiling turtle on one side and the flip side blue dotted mound can be an "iceberg" for other bath toys to stand on) 4. Activates automatically (display turns on when water contacts the sensors in the base, and deactivates when the water drains out) which saves the LR44 1.5V button battery 5. Easy to use with no buttons (has been very reliable for the 2 years that I've used it so far, including being dropped numerous times) Because you can see a near-instant digital display of the water temperature, there is no comparison for this product to those that have heat-activated "HOT" printed on on them (which at least for my Munchkin duck and bathtub grippy dots, start to turn white at a still-comfortable 98ish Fahrenheit). It is very useful to see the display to adjust to a consistent water temperature during bath time no matter what your room temperature is currently (since how warm your own body is compared to the ambient air will affect how comfortable you think the water is when you test it with your hand). I find it useful whether your goal is to create a warm bath for playtime or to make a tepid bath to help reduce a fever. Read more

This thermometer is great - does exactly what it says it will do. The thermometer kicks into action the moment it hits the water and monitors the temperature well (in F and C, and to one decimal place) throughout baby's bath time. One thing we always do, though, is wait about 10-15 seconds to let the thermometer take at least a few readings before setting baby in the tub. We have not had any issues with the thermometer and the beeping that other reviewers have mentioned which comes at the end when you rinse, is easily stopped when you give it a good shake to get all the water out. Also, we're sure our little one will enjoy the cute turtle as soon as she begins to see what it is! All in all, a great product and highly recommend it. It provides peace of mind on the safety of the water temperature with no effort at all. UPDATE (May 27, 2010): We are now experiencing the beeping which randomly occurs and is difficult to stop. Rather annoying. Read more

I have used this turtle for two weeks now and I love it!!! I am a first time mom and just had no idea what temperature is good for baby. I love scalding hot showers, so what feels right to me was probably still too hot for baby. When it came time to bathe him. . . I was so scared of having the water too hot, that it was too cold! (Which I now only know it was too cold thanks to the turtle themometer!!!) He screamed the whole time during that bath and I thought he just hated bathtime. That next day I ordered the turtle, it was shipped using prime and here in a day. So for his next bath the temperature was just right and he loved bathtime!!! No screaming or crying! I think I will definitely give this to other first time moms as a shower gift. As far as it's longevity. . . mine seems to be working great, granted it's only been a couple of weeks. . . but if it broke tomorrow I would order another one happily. For me it's just worth it to know that the temperature is just right. I am sure I will get the hang of it eventually (as far as figuring out the right temp) but until then, I am happy to use this! We bought the Aquatopia Deluxe for our newborn son 2 months ago; it was very easy to use while it lasted, but it lasted only about a week. We had decided to buy it after reading these stellar reviews, and even though it cost a little more, we thought we were paying for better quality. The biggest mistake we made was throwing away the packaging (including the warranty), at a time when we were getting rid of piles of boxes that came with the baby items we had bought online. The Aquatopia looked exactly like pictured -- cute, and was very easy to use, for exactly 4 baths. It powered off automatically almost as soon as I took it out of the water. During our son's 5th bath, I noticed there was a small amount of water under the display window. I took it out of the water immediately, but it didn't power off like it had done previously. I followed by shaking it, as some reviewers here had described doing, but again it did not power off. It finally went off on its own after about five minutes. At midnight the same day, in between our son's feedings, we were awakened by a loud, high-pitched sound from the Aquatopia. I knew something was wrong, but still held out hope this was just a signal that the battery needed to be changed. When I opened up the battery covers (there were two layers), I found tiny drops of water on top of the battery (bad sign). After I replaced the battey and put the Aquatopia back in the water, it did not turn itself back on again. It was obviously that the thermometer had short-circuited. When I looked under the back cover, I found rust had spread across the entire circuit board. If we had kept the original packaging and warranty, we could have had it replaced. When we decide to buy another bath thermometer, we will stay away from Aquatopia. Read more
