If not used daily, this machine will either develop calcification faster or develop contamination inside the reservoir when left unplugged and water not drained throughly. It works as simple as you pour in the same amount of water for number of coffee cups you need, then the hot water flows down to the filter with ground coffee very fast, only if the machine remains on to keep water hot. Update 9 years later.... Still just as happy, aged well and looks likes it did when we got it. Still used everyday, morning and night. So lots of money for a coffee maker that last a long time has made a good value. Bought this to replace two typical coffee makers for regular and decaf every morning. Had been getting about 2 years service out of the cheapy makers had been buying so am hoping this will last a good while. Counter top space is about the same, fits under a wall cabinet, and the water pours in at the front so not moving anything. It is big though, so located mine at the left end of a counter next to a wall and it doesn't seem as big. Because of its size, almost bought the same machine with a single warming plate and a separate warming plate; glad I didn't now, many times all three used. Brewed coffee is perfect. Also use for iced tea, hot tea, and hot chocolate. Wow, this thing is convenient. My family drinks lots of iced tea; no worrying about boiling tea on the stovetop any more and the temperature / turbulence brews a stronger tea than boiling on the stove top.
