This is definitely not one of the sturdier backpacks, but if your kiddo goes through them once a year anyway, it could work for you. The material is not canvas - it's light enough that light easily can be seen through it. While I appreciate the pattern (my student thought the shapes were like the state of Florida), I wonder how well such material will hold up through repeated use. The lack of reinforcement at the bottom suggests to me that I'll see holes from books and concrete in a few months, but we'll see. The inner pocket for laptops is small, it would cover a tablet or ipad but not a 15" laptop. It'll stay, certainly, but it's a short pocket, if that matters. The other pocketed compartments will hold books, pencils, etc, and the organization is such that if my student were to carry headphones I'd want a hard shell to protect them. There isn't really any padding inside. The exterior is plastic zippers, plastic zipper pulls and plastic tie holders, which is what I'd expect at this price point, though the straps seem to be well-sewn. There are two netted bottleholders, though these are smaller and will probably not hold an Owala though a disposible water bottle or thinner bottle would hold fine.
