You can take the cover off by unsnapping it in the bowl area, but my skin is super sensitive and doesn't like the material so I use a pillowcase. I can still use the hand rest with a case, so it's fine. So far, there's no crushing of the pillow or anything like that; looks like it will hold up a good long time. I have tried many pillows after my neck surgery, and I have a graveyard pile from the effort. This pillow seems to be just the right fit. It is lower than my last pillow, so it took a little to get used to, but I no longer wake up with headaches, and it seems to be working well. While this pillow is soft and creates multiply ways to lay more comfortably, in my opinion it is just not thick enough. I feel like my head is not up and aligned as it should be, which cause my shoulder to be sashed up and uncomfortable when I lay on my side. I really like this pillow. It is perfect for my neck and back. It's just the right firmness. I thought it might be too firm but a night's sleep showed me it was fine. I didn't spend the night punching and squishing it like my other pillows. It recommends leaving out to alleviate any smell from manufacturing. I did that even though I didn't detect any unpleasant odor. It was very reasonably priced. Not so little to make me suspicious of cheap materials but not so expensive to break the budget.
