This $30 DVD-player reminds you that price is often proportional to performance. It has its own intelligence to decide whether it will let you watch a DVD or not. As you place the DVD, it starts thinking, the DVD spins with a soft buzzing sound and the TV screen says 'Loading...' with three dots proving that Coby is active. After a while Coby either puts the familiar FBI warning image or decides that the DVD is not worth watching and says 'Open' or 'No Disc' or some such thing. If you are really determined then you get up from your sofa, press the cover, switch on/off few times (a method of fixing things popularized by Microsoft) and hope Coby will change its mind. Good Night & Good Luck. Read more

I bought 2 of these two years ago. One for each of my kids rooms. They are great and work wonderfully. Very portable and small so don't take up alot of room. Has a remote too. The kids loved them as christmas presents. Read more

I purchased this DVD player to hook into a small combo TV/VCR at our antique shop so we could relax and play DVD's during our down time. I had problems from the get go. I tried two brand new professional DVD's and kept getting the error Wrong Disc which means something is supposed to be wrong with your DVD. I re-read the instructions which advised turning the unit off and unplugging it for 30 minutes & trying again. I could spent my day doing that given the number of times this thing malfunctions. It skips both in audio and video and you can forget selecting the next screen....a total invitation for the unit to freak and freeze. The remote appears to work well for all the good it does because once you make a move with it the player freezes, and you have to re-start the entire movie. Forget starting where you left off and forget getting what you want by selecting scene selection. It simply freezes and doesn't respond. This was a total waste of $25, and the relaxation I was seeking has turned into a fiasco of fighting with an inferior and shoddy piece of electronics. BEWARE!!!! Read more

I bought this DVD player thinking that I would give it as a gift to my friend. AS of March 8/9 2005, it still says pre-order but 5 minutes after a checked-out, it's status is already shipping soon. I guess it was shipped on the same day because I received the item by March 11. So, I opened the box and set-up it up.. it's so small, I love it. The media that I tried was DVDr and the picture at the TV was ok but there would be some milisecond stop from time to time. It seemed that the DVD could not read smoothly the media on it. And the dvd makes a loud noise. You can hear the disc spinning inside it 8 feet away from it. If it's not the DVD, it should be something else. All in all I would not suggest the DVD to be your main DVD player. Its performance is mediocre. I'll keep mine however as a spare in case of DVD player emergency :-) . For 32 bucks, it's worth keeping it. I'll try to find another another dvd player for my gift to my friend though. Read more

I bought this DVD player because it has the ability to play all regions and convert NTSC-PAL and vice versa. It actually works quite well (and I am a tech-geek, so I don't like junk). But for $30... you CAN'T go wrong with this baby. I bought a PAL DVD set from UK and I popped it into my player and 1 disc played fine, no flickers, nothing, it worked great! PROBLEM: the 2nd Disc in the set wouldn't play and there was a "Wrong region" message, which is BS, because the player plays all region. I called Coby's customer support and they gave me a run around with " You need an R/F-Modulator" ... I didn't. All I did was use a code I found online: "With remote control and player stopped, press setup, vol+, vol-, vol+, vol- Use arrow keys to select region 1-6 or 255 for all region. Numbers appear on TV screen. Press setup again to save and exit." To change the region to 2 (Which was my DVD's region) and the DVD played just fine. So obviously, there are some format issues with this player, but once I fixed it, I'm really really happy. Where else can you get a PAL-NTSC converting DVD player for $30!??? It's quite the deal for the purpose of playing foreign DVDs. It's a nice little player, tiny too, so it won't take up space anywhere. AND, it plays MP3s well also. For the price, you could plug it into your stereo and use it to play MP3's. So its a win win ... and for the price, if something went wrong in the future, just buy a new one. I recommend this! Its a nice player for the price and its versitality!!! Read more

All in all, the Coby DVD player works, but the noise is far more annoying than I thought it would be. I have a family, and sometimes I wan't to watch a DVD while other members of the family are asleep. So, I turn the volume down. Yet, when the volume of the TV is low, the loud humming noise of the DVD player becomes even more audible, and annoying. I'm returning it. Read more
