Wow!

This short series was the most intriguing project (IMO) ever on television. The plot was complicated (psi-fi/espionage/political), but I couldn't wait for the next installment. It's a keeper! Read more

Counterpart makes J. K. Simmons shine!

J. K. Simmons is a master at making his characters multi-faceted. He's at his best in this show! What ripples are caused by your actions? It makes you really think about what makes someone good or evil. Are secrets worth keeping, at the expense of your sanity? Stephen Rea has a great story arc, although I wish he were in more episodes. Wish they'd do more episodes or even a movie. Check it out! Read more

Engrossing

You'll have to watch a couple times at least. Complex characters; narrative is fairly straightforward, but with a twist that makes it unusual, and curious to follow; not all questions are answered. It's reminiscent of how Westworld built it's story into something with infinite complexities. Get past the first episode, and see for yourself. It's a joy and a terror - it's engrossing. Read more

Not your usual spy thriller

While I am, admittedly, only seven episodes into this first season on DVD, I am fascinated by any unfolding story which explores the political/social/psychological/diplomatic consequences of discovering billions of us living next door to billions of others identical to us in a parallel universe, for better or worse. Are the lives of one world better or worse, what sort of technological advantages (or lack of them) would exist, which celebrities, family members, loved ones, et al are alive in one world, but not in another? Might the ills of one world be blamed (rightly or wrongly) on actions of those in another? And how might it influence any given person who learns that his/her personal fortune, career, health, love life, etc. in one world is a consequence of one tiny, seemingly unimportant decision in one's past in another world where one chose a different fork in the road? Of course, this assumes the dual existence of these worlds is public knowledge, rather than a secret fiercely guarded by a handful of diplomats in the know, as billions of folks being aware of this might easily be an explosive nightmare, a genie impossible to return to its bottle. COUNTERPART is just the sort of series that explores such questions. And although I have yet to complete viewing Season One, as I said earlier, it's come to my attention from other viewers--minus any spoilers from them--that the season ends in a shocking manner that one simply does not see coming. I can't recommend this series enough, and hope to see more of it. Read more
