I recently got Dooms 1, 2, and 3 for Switch to replay and maybe finally ever beat (I played Doom 1 around when it came out on the free shareware episode but I was not good) and got through the first and second and a bit of the third, but honestly the third was a bit slow-paced, at least at the beginning, so I went ahead and grabbed this one early, and boy was I not disappointed. It runs at 30FPS and there's definitely a bit of texture pop-in or lower resolution textures (notably when forcing doors open, the resolution of ol' Doomslayer's hands seems a lot higher than that of the door) but I honestly don't notice either of those things as I'm frantically running and jumping and parkouring around blasting bad guys. The action is smooth, the guns are weighty and satisfying, and the pacing is frantic. I've played entirely so far in handheld mode and it doesn't feel underpowered that way. Overall, 10/10 for gameplay (real proper return to classic Doom form but in a very 2016 way that makes me very excited for Doom Eternal), 7/10 for graphics (9/10 adjusted on a curve for Switch), 10/10 for sound design. Doom 2016 on Switch is functionally similar to Doom 1993 on a 486 SX. While it inarguably takes away from the game by have it running in a less than state-of-the-art way, in the long run if you're able to functionally kill demons and it's fun, then the who cares? Sure, there are things that are exorcised (snapmap) or pared back, but the crux of the argument is that I can open up Doom on a plane ride or subway trip, blast away at things with impunity, and have a grand time and for that, I have to applaud Panic Button for that ability. Yes, if you can only afford one copy and you have other systems that can support Doom 2016 available, this is probably _not_ the only version to own. If that's not the case, however, and you only have a Switch or you want to have this as a supplemental experience, then really, it's worth having this exist in the world and for it to be ported in as good a form as it can. Doom is an amazing game, I reccomend it to anyone who enjoys horror/ Action games. But Doom does not play well on a switch lite. You can barely kill easy enemies let alone the bosses. DO NOT BUY FOR SWITCH LITE. ONLY FOR REGULAR SWITCH THAT HAS A DOCK Read more
Doom was my favorite game growing up so saw this and got it...... BIG MISTAKE and waste of money, if you’re not an avid gamer I suggest you not get this, graphics are great but you can’t shoot ANYTHING everything is so fast I’ve had it for a week and can’t get past the tutorial..... and being it was digital I can’t even return it, so I’m stuck with a game I can’t even play.
