I love this machine. It's my 3rd Dyson, but my first cordless other than the old hand-held Shark types. This vacuum can (and will) completely replace my corded Dyson, which is now sitting in the garage. I'm cleaning up after 10 Persian cats who have access to an outside enclosure, complete with dirt weeds, etc. I need to vacuum daily. Previously I would vacuum downstairs daily, then once a week, lug the vacuum upstairs and also pull out the hose and attachment for the stairs. I also only vacuumed the central part of the downstairs daily up to the length of the cord, so several rooms only got treated daily on a partial basis. I have a small home, 1100 sq ft, and I've been using the DC59 Animal to vacuum the entire house including furniture, stairs, etc... plus the mini rotating head works very well on cat trees, beds, etc. I have not yet run the battery completely down in one session. The suction is very good and I have had no need to bump it up to MAX. It's light weight and easy to maneuver. Some of the complaints in reviews I read were: small size of the receptacle and also the receptacle doesn't empty well when you pop it open, short battery life, charger station doesn't hold all 3 of the tools. I've already addressed the battery life. It's seems to be enough for a pretty thorough vacuum session with some left over. It is true that the receptacle is small. I generally dump it once during and once after. I don't find that I mind this. It's also true that the contents of the receptacle don't just fall out when you pop it open. It's called the "Animal" for a reason, which means you expect to be picking up a lot of pet fur, which it does. This winds around up 'in there' and has to be pulled out by hand. This was true of my corded vacuum as well. I do find that the suction is so good that the fur and a lot of fine dust gets caught up top of the receptacle and the entire receptacle needs to be removed to clean that out. A small chore, and I didn't see anything in the directions about getting all of the dust in side this area cleaned out. I took my leaf blower to it outside and that worked well. This is possibly my only complaint with this machine to date. 4/12/15 Update: I've had this vac for a little while now and thought I'd write an update. I STILL love it, and I'm not downgrading it. However, a couple of things to note that hopefully Dyson will address at some point. The filter that slides into the top needs to clip in somehow. It falls out way too easy and this vacuum is so light weight that you often have it at an angle, if not almost upside down. It's also an issue when cleaning it. I noticed it was gone (you often don't see it slide out) and managed to track it down to the trash can. You ARE going to be holding this at all angles when you clean out the bin. A piece of tape over it holds it fine, but for a $400+ machine, you hate to see tape on it. The other issue is the bin. As mentioned before, pet fur does not just drop out when you open the bin and you have to go in after it. I don't mind that too much, but the suction is so good that it swirls it up to where it gets caught in the groove where the bin attaches at the top. You can take the bin clear off which is necessary, but even then this stuff is wedged in the groove. Something like a tooth brush will get it. A minor inconvenience. Read more
I just love this machine! It's light and easy to change from floor vac to small sofa, stair, car vacuum. The suction is super strong and the canister release makes emptying the unit after each use super easy. Also great in all positions, cobwebs, etc. I really like that because there are no cords it's just so fast to pick it up and do a room or hallway as needed without the big production of managing the long cords and it's very maneuverable. My house is cleaner because I vacuum more often because it's so easy to use and put away. Cons are that the battery life is quite short. I wish it would last even another 20 minutes. But it does recharge quickly For me it was very pricey, but the performance and flexibility it gives me make it worth it. Dyson stands behind their products and I think it was a good investment. I have used my big Dyson for years and love it. Not surprised that this cordless Dyson is also great. Of course, every product has its limitations, but I believe that the pros outweigh the cons. I purchased this Dyson to keep my hard floors clean (about 2,000 sqft.). I try to use it daily as our home has a lot of traffic and like something that is light and easy to use. No, it does not pick up everything... a bead, popcorn kernel or leaf may stay on the floor and I might have to bend down to pick it up, however, I wanted something that would keep the dirt and sand up in order to avoid damage to my floors and it does that perfectly; besides, the bending exercise doesn't hurt. True, the battery doesn't last forever, but moving quickly, I can usually get most of the hard floors done. Who wants to vacuum all day? I do what it will do and the next day, pick up where we left off. I was very pleased at how well this does on carpet and use it regularly on my stairs which can be a bit difficult with a bigger machine. I have vacuumed my stairs and then gone back with my big Dyson Animal and picked up very little dirt in a second go around, testifying to the great suction the cordless has on high power. I highly recommend for anyone who is in a small home or has physical limitations for all floors, both hard and carpet. I've used the Dyson DC59 for a full year now and, although it picks up an incredible amount of fine dust, there are a number of significant things that force me to give it a mediocre rating. First, the power button has to be depressed continuously in order to keep it working. This seems like a small thing, but when you're laying on your stomach reaching under beds, keeping the power button depressed is annoying and tiring. Second, the dust bin is a real pain in the neck to clean out. The dirt doesn't just fall out of the bin. There's a filter mechanism that projects into the dust bin and the dirt gathers around it. You either have to use your fingers (Yuck) or something like a small crochet needle to clean out the bin. In addition, a separate red button opens the dust bin but its very close to the power switch and you often wind up pressing both at the same time. Third, I've had a continuing problem as I vacuum where the motor starts to run intermittently. On two seconds, off two seconds. I've called and they tell me to wash the filter, but when I check the filter it seems clean. To clean the filter, you have to run it under cool water which means you can't use the machine until it is thoroughly dry.
