This 3-piece musical instrument gift set includes a plastic recorder, tambourine, and harmonica. The instruments are made of sturdy plastic with metal jingles on the tambourine. The color is an aqua-blue. I tested the recorder and the harmonica by playing songs on them, and I jangled the tambourine. Pros: The recorder is in two pieces, which slide together for a good, tight fit. The sound is clear and sharp. The holes are placed appropriately for fingering. It is a typical, sturdy, plastic recorder one would use in music class. The tambourine is sturdy. The jingles jingle-jangle with a clear, melodious sound. The grip is shaped and sized for a small hand, which is appropriate for a child. My adult-sized hand fit fine, though. Cons: The harmonica has a good, rich sound in the low reeds, however, and this is why I deducted two stars, the high reeds are so tight that it takes a hard exhale/inhale to achieve any sound at all, and that sound is squeaky and faint at best. I tested with two songs: "Red River Valley" (which stays in the lower notes) and "You are My Sunshine" (which uses higher notes). "Red River Valley" played well. "You are My Sunshine" sounded tinny in the high notes, which required extra breath-effort to even get a sound. If you are looking for inexpensive musical instruments just for the sheer torture of a noise-creation experience for all involved, then this set will do the job—the tambourine’s jingle-jangle-jingle…the recorder’s toot-squeal-toot…the harmonica’s sliding, breathy notes on repeat—are as tolerable as the listeners’ aural stimulation threshold. Overall, if you want instruments that a child (or whoever is playing) can produce actual songs with, the recorder will provide that, and the tambourine will keep the rhythm. I bought this for a child I babysit. I had tried to teach her to use my grandpa's harmonica, but that didn't go over well. She was able to blow this flute, though, and we rocked out to Elvis Presley songs with the flute and jamborie. We sounded awful. but we sure had fun. The instruments are made of strong plastic and can take a pounding. Bottom line, I'm glad I bought it and would recommend it for toddlers in particular. Read more
