I only bought this to be able to watch Bluray movies on my computer and it quit working on the first movie. I got just over an hour into the movie when it suddenly quit and reported a read error. Then my computer stopped recognizing the drive. This was on a brand new disk. I rebooted and was able to watch more. This quit/reboot pattern repeated a few more times until I got to the last 10 minutes of the movie. By then I was so frustrated I gave up and just went and bought a regular Bluray player at my local big box store. I returned this Bluray drive shortly thereafter. Read more

I was happy to see that the drive I received on Jan 3rd 2026 identified as a HL-DT-ST BD-RE BU50N. The drive looks like the attached pics. Out of the box the drive firmware has Libre Mode support however Libre Mode is disabled. I already happened to have the required firmware upgrade on my hard disk to enable Libre Mode and a 5 minute trip through my hard drive and a firmware flash later Libre Mode was enabled. If Libre Mode is one of your goals this drive is a solid choice although firmware upgrade WAS REQUIRED however trivial on the drive I received. The drive is both metal and plastic topped with an angular stamped metal piece for design on the top. It's ok but I would have preferred the entire top being a nice piece of what appears to be brushed aluminum, its nice and kinda artsy but doesn't do anything to make the drive feel any more robust or nicer like some full brushed aluminum tops do. Over the past 5 days I have run several dozen disc's through the drive in Libre Mode and it has easily read and recorded any disc I have put in it 4K UHD 90+ GB disc's no problem! While this drive has the 4 USB3 ports Type A on it I would have preferred 2x USB-C ports and 2x USB3 Type A ports like I have seen on another similar drive. The two USB C ports would have been great for modern computing in 2026. Also nice to have the two different format sd card slots available, this works a treat for me as one of the things I use this drive for is storage of my 4K home movies recorded to BluRay with one of my 4K Panasonic video cameras as the source. This allows me to transfer data from the SD cards from these cameras quite easily so its a really nice addition when I want to move videos from flash onto BluRay as the card reader required is built right into the drive! Very nice touch for those of us who make home movies and save them to BluRay these days so we can actually watch them on our home entertainment platform later. Nice ok priced drive at $120 with what it has to offer and a solid choice if you desire Libre Mode although you need to do a little work to get that enabled. Read more

Build feels like good quality. Works for both iMac and PC, no drivers to download (in my case), it simply worked. Not much else to say, honestly. Maybe the transfer rate of data could be better, but I’m using it to simply read data and play physical media. Good price, no complaints. Read more

This does NOT do what it says it does in the description. It would not play 4k discs.... it would not even play Blu-ray. You have to download external software to use it. What happened to a finished product? I knew beforehand I would have to download the software.. did that. Still did not work. I tried for 45 minutes to get this to recognize ANY kind of disc and it would not work. Amazon needs to do a better job cracking down on mis-leading labels on products that DO NOT do what they say they do. Highly dissatisfied by this. Read more

This blu-ray disc drive does an excellent job with playback as well a ripping CDs. It comes with a cord for power supply by USB plug. I do recommend it highly! Read more
