I’ve used tons of nitrifying bacteria products but always come back to this one. It’s different because it seems to contain the bacteria itself rather than just food for the non-existent bacteria like other brands. It works well in new tanks, and even better if you have some starter filter floss or something. The bottle is a large size and a good value. My first time using Fritzzyme 7, I ordered this 2-Pack and the first bottle I opened smelled like an outhouse toilet and the liquid was brown color. The expire date was good for another year. I read the manufacturer FAQ which said that it's ok for it to have a pungent odor sometimes and that is perfectly safe. So I used it anyway according to instructions. My ammonia levels shot through the roof on this brand new tank that had nothing else added to it. I was puzzled because it says you can introduce fish right away and that it's safe for fish. My ammonia level would have killed anything instantly. So that instruction is misleading. Out of curiosity I opened the 2nd bottle, and that one I could barely smell anything, just a subtle earthy odor, and it was more purplish color. Then I realize right away that the first bottle was a bunch of dead bacteria, and the second bottle was how it is supposed to be. The first one was probably subject to excess heat during shipping, that would be my guess. The manufacturer instructions should be updated that it's safe for immediate introduction of fish IF you DON'T get a spoiled bottle. But if you do get a spoiled bottle, the tank will be dangerous for fish at first, until it cycles. Overall I love this product, a lot of professionals use it. I just want to clarify this instruction to check the smell and color for a spoiled bottle and resulting major ammonia spike, before anyone mistakenly thinks this is universally safe for instant stocking. This product saved my cycle. After adding new fish to my established and planted tank, my cycle started to crash as the newbies carried a much heavier bio load than the other inhabitants. I read about this product on multiple forums and wanted to give it a try as other additives weren’t helping (along with more frequent water changes). After a few days of the product’s use, my cycle rebounded and has remained stable since. The only downside is the product has an unfavorable smell, but it don’t linger. I will be using this moving forward when starting new tanks and adding fish. Read more
