I would give this mat 3.5 stars if it were an option. I use this mat for yoga. It is a bit slippery, which can be a little distracting, but I can still accomplish downward dog, 3-legged dog and other poses. I do often have to re-adjust my hands if we are holding a longer downward dog though. I haven't gone recently, but I used to bring this to a hot yoga class and the slipperiness was more frustrating, but I managed. It is decently thick, but I usually still add padding under my knee for low lunge (kneeling on one knee). I have another mat which is thick and doesn't slip at all, which is better for yoga. However, I continue to bring this mat to classes because it's light and easy to carry when I'm walking, which is a big pro for me. I would say this mat isn't for "super-serious yoga," but the convenience of it has its perks. And I think it is quite pretty :) Read more

I want to focus this review on mat thickness. Thickness: As a newcomer I did a lot of research on the thickness of a mat. I reasoned that many of the top-brand yoga mat makers label 5mm as their "thick" option. I am using this on hard wood flooring, so I was looking for a comfortable amount of padding and was worried that 5mm was going to be too thin. However, if this was considered thick by the top brands, I'll take their word for it. I can vouch for the 5mm being just right for me. I am not so sure that a thicker mat would pose a problem with balance (though it could), but in general this thickness seems just right. If using on carpet I would go with a thinner mat since at that point I would only be looking for stickiness rather than both stickiness and padding. Then again, the 5mm option might do well in both scenarios and make it a great multi-flooring mat. This was my first yoga mat and I am very happy with it. The quality of the mat is great. It's made by a well known and trusted name in the industry. You will definitely find that it is a bit slippery once you start sweating, so your practice will need to be accompanied with a towel if you are pushing your yoga to the limit. Read more

Beautiful and great! I see what people mean about the smell, but the smell does not bother me. It just smells new and a little like rubber but it doesn’t smell bad. This is my first Gaiam mat; before this I was buying a generic one through Amazon I think called Yoga Accessories. This Gaiam is only $2 more and seems like it’s better quality. But I will add that I mainly use it as a workout mat as opposed to a yoga mat, so I can’t speak to the slippery aspect as much. Read more

I needed a yoga mat that I could use outdoors and in. This Gaiam 5mm mat is perfect! It has the right amount of cushioning on hard floors and on grass. The grip is very good too - I've used it in light drizzle and didn't slip one bit! It is the perfect length for a medium to tall person to stretch out completely on. I do like the patterns on the mat as well, very pretty against the light purple. The smell on the mat was noticeable only the first two or three times I used it. It might help if you let the mat 'air out' a little bit before you use it. Read more
