GEEKOM A6 Mini PC with AMD Ryzen 7 6800H 16GB DDR5 RAM Upgradable Not LPDDR 1TB PCIe 4

For the past 20+ years I have used NUC-type computers as my everyday desktop computers so I do have some experience with them. Up until now they have all been Intel-branded so the Geekom A6 is the first with an AMD CPU. Overall Impression Setup was a breeze. The boot-up process walks you thru everything including going out to the Geekom website to get updated drivers. I initially installed Windows 10 but switched back to Windows 11 which I’m currently using. Both worked fine (Win10 drivers are available on the website). The Win11 Pro that came installed with the A6 is relatively bloat-free. I did a clean install anyway but it really isn’t necessary. I do NOT use the A6 for gaming so can’t comment on that. The Ryzen 7 6800H is a lot faster than I thought it would be. I trans-code a lot of videos (pretty CPU-intensive) and the ability to do multiples simultaneously is amazing. Both Handbrake and Format Factory utilize the AMD hardware acceleration (both CPU and GPU cores). The 32GB of DDR5 RAM no doubt helps. Fan noise is non-existent during most daily operations (surfing, word processing / Excel, watching videos, etc.). The fan noise during video conversions is there but minimal and “softer” in nature, if that makes sense. The box stays cool. All the ports work fine and at the rated speeds. All components (drivers, etc.) were recognized by Windows. There have been no software conflicts so far. Overall construction is top notch as was packaging. Not really a complaint but I would have liked one more USB 3 Gen 3.2 port instead of the USB 2 port. On the other hand, the dual USB 3 type-C ports are a bonus so I guess you can’t have everything. The BIOS is a little old-school so if you like to “tune” everything there aren’t a lot of options. All the basics are there however. Overall, zero complaints. You get an awful lot of computer with the Geekom, certainly everything required of a typical desktop computer. As mentioned, I do not use it for gaming so I'll leave that to the experts. I do use it for everything else (and then some). I have a couple of other NUC’s that are beginning to “age out” and will probably replace them with Geekom products when the time comes. I'm a geezer. After always opting for the cheapest computer that worked (from the days of Hewlett Packard in a huge box, remember that?), and after my last computer fried its motherboard, I decided to take a look around to see if I could do better. Well, I think I did. Of course, computers get better as time goes on, but really, this was impressive. Like, I just plugged the USB from my printer into it, and boom, there was my printer working...you don't know how great that is until you've had to download the printer files from various websites with mixed results. Loaded photos from my phone, used an SD card form an old camera to load others, put in my back-up files which were read quickly, and I was back to work. The thing has two fans to keep it cool (hello, old computer? maybe you could have used one), which was important to me. I didn't want to lose another computer to "heat exhaustion", especially when it's so compact. Read the specs...it costs money to make parts from copper rather than plastic. So I paid for it, and was more than satisfied with the results. Losing a computer to heat is the pits. But this was a very worthwhile upgrade. UPDATE: 3/1/26: The wi-fi failed after six months. I wrote to Geekom and got an answer the next day, trying to troubleshoot the problem. When it continued to fail, Geekom offered me a new computer. Having loaded a bunch of sensitive data on it already, I tried to troubleshoot myself, and found my router to be the problem. But kudos to Geekom. Replied instantly, and stood by their product 100%. The A6 is an attractive, small, relatively quiet mini PC that is probably perfectly suitable for many different purposes. Unfortunately, I have discovered that it is unsuitable for the one purpose for which I bought it: torrenting. My old HP Z4, despite its age, is literally five to ten times faster. I've come to learn that the RealTek NIC used in many mini PCs, despite its faster 2.5G rating, are no match to older workstation grade 1G NICs like the ones in my HP. Maybe this is obvious to some but I had to learn the hard way. Nevertheless, the A6 seems like a quality product that could suit other use cases well. Read more
