Place sand in your aquarium before filling with water. 5. Begin filling your aquarium by pouring water onto a plate or saucer sitting on the sand to help minimize stirring up dust. 6. Do not run your filter until dust has settled; dust usually settles in a few days. 7. To clean your sand bed with a gravel vacuum, care must be taken to avoid removing the sand by limiting the flow rate through the siphon tube.
