Installed a Nest thermostat on my daughter’s condo and found out she only had two wires, red and white with no possibility of running a real C wire due to plaster walls. Confirmed that the furnace had a C wire (critical) and then ordered this dongle. My application was a heat only furnace so the wiring was fairly simple. I strongly recommend that you get three of the wagu type snap-on UL approved wiring connectors unless you have screw terminations to attach to. There are two of the snap on connectors in the box but you will need three more for the furnace side . Trust me - have the connectors handy and installing this device is easy, I tried to use twist on wire nuts but the nuts would no stay on. You need to “tell” the nest thermostat that this adapter was installed during the programming phase on your phone or tablet. Do that slowly because if you miss the check box that says this device was installed the thermostat will not work and the only way to fix it is to delete the thermostat and install it as a new device. Note - This device is specifically designed for the nest thermostat. It will not work as a workaround to add a missing C wire to other thermostat brands. Read more

Something is wrong with the Nest Power Connector's internal components, as it tries to deliver power. I'm not sure how it's supposed to work (some kind of switch?), but it does not do the same job as a dedicated C-wire. To preface, we have a baseboard radiator system with an oil furnace and a separate AC system with air handlers. Some thermostats in our house are heat only, others both AC and heat. I installed two Nest Power Connectors, one on a Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd gen and one on a Nest Thermostat. Installation was a breeze. The 3rd gen had previously been using the workaround with a G (fan) wire as a C wire with no power issues. The Nest Thermostat was newly installed. After installation, the Power Connector at the air handler for the Nest Learning Thermostat (heat and ac controller), the unit started having low power issues within 24h (screen not turning on, disconnecting from the temp sensor, wifi disconnecting). Same issue with the Nest Thermostat in the basement (heat only) with the power connector at the HVAC (a Taco 6 zone switch relay board), with power issue error messages showing up on the screen and being emailed within a week. I double checked all the connections with a multimeter, R to W and R to C both had ~27 V, and the Nest itself read enough power coming in. Unfortunately, I had to remove the devices and run a dedicated C wire (not an easy process in our house). Since installation of the C wire, the Nest Learning Thermostat has been working excellently with no issues, indicating that the Power Connector does not do its job as a replacement for an actual C wire. (The other Nest Thermostat still will not work as after a week it had another power issue, and Google Nest support did issue me a replacement device. So it's hard to judge what caused its failure.) As a product, this is similar to the other Nest products. Good quality, nicely packaged, well thought out and clear instructions, and even the quality of the supplied wire connectors was great. I recently purchased two Google Nest learning thermostats as part of a PSEG promotion, to replace old 2-wire thermostats controlling a hot water baseboard system with Taco zone valves. While the thermostats worked sorta, it was clear that without a common wire, the thermostats were unreliable. So I hoped that this Power connector would help, but after installing and following instructions, things just worked the same way as before. I then realized that the new Learning Thermostats that I had just bought were v2, and this power connector only works with v3 learning thermostats. So if you have a learning thermostat, make sure you know which version you have before buying these. In my case, things ended up in a good place because while I was doing this, I realized that the thermostat cable in my house was actually a 3 conductor cable even though only two were used (Rh and W). So I was able to create an actual C wire using the spare conductor in the existing cable, connecting one end to the C terminal on the thermostat, and the other to the #2 terminal on the Taco zone valve. I did this for both thermostats, and they both now work perfectly all the time. So the moral of this story is, before you spend money on one of these things, check your existing wiring and make sure there is not an unused conductor in your thermostat wiring that you can use to make a common wire and get the best solution for a few minutes of work. (And if none of that makes sense, hire a pro to help!) Read more
Instructions could be a lot better and no schematic but the engineering is sound. I wish they would have explained what it does and how it works, dumded it down to the point where it explains almost nothing. That said, this is what you need. And the price is fair. Read more
I purchased this for my Nest Thermostat, as my furnace only has the R and W wires, thinking this would somehow remedy the lack of a C wire. After reading the instructions for my specific scenario, the Nest document suggested I get another 24VAC transformer , which is what my existing furnace has. I put my thinking hat on and looked into converting my existing furnace transformer into a C, W and R model, vs buying an additional W and R transformer. The C wire supplies steady power, and the existing transformer does the same thing, why not just daisy chain it to the W terminal I thought. Did some more digging and you can in fact do that. In my case, there were 3 wires running into the building already, so I did the daisy chaining at the furnace. If it was just 2 wires, daisy chain the W wire to C at the thermostat. Will be returning it as it's more gimmicky than functional. If you have to buy a 24vac transformer, might as well buy a plug in one and you won't need the Power connector. Read more
