Haier DVD50 Compact DVD Player

Remote control unit did not work. Seller did not have a replacement unit of the exact type so they substituted a "universal" unit which also did not work. I returned the unit at my expense and am still waiting for some type of refund. Why should I be stuck with return expenses when the cause of the return was the product and service? Why should I get a partial refund, if that is what I am to receive? Read more

I stumbled across some reviews for this unit online and for the price and the functionality, it cant' be beat. It does everything the other reviewers have noted, it plays DVD ISOs and CD-Rs with divx and xvid files quite handily, and it apparently ignores region codes. If you've read about Chinese-made super dvd players that are cheap but play everything, well, now you've found the American/European available counterpart. The only caveat with the unit is the remote is very poor in quality, the buttons take an almost Herculean effort to actually activate the remote to send a signal... and even then it might do the wrong thing. I got this DVD player because some of my favorite movies stopped playing in my other one (kids never put stuff back in cases when they are in a hurry to watch cartoons). Some of the discs are too scratched. I read one online review that said this player handles damaged discs very well, and it does. I haven't had one problem with it freezing, if it encounters a spot that it can't read it just skips ahead a few seconds and continues to play. I needed narrow player that would fit in a small space. This fits (ha ha) the bill. This player gives new meaning to the word "cheap". Not only it is flimsy, Power light is always red - not matter if it's on or off. I expected it to turn green when on but this is not the case. Since there are no other indicators you can't tell if it's on or off just by looking at it. That being said it works fine and supports VideoCDs and DVD-R (I only tested single layer). I bought this player in 2010. No problems at all. I'm a very heavy dvd watcher (everyday 4-8 hours, sometimes i fall asleep with a movie playing over night) The player is still working like a champ. Read more

I purchased this Haier DVD50 in May'09 via retailer on Amazon.com because I wanted a small form factor DVD player for my bedroom. It was JOA (Junk On Arrival). The first time I tried to use it it would not eject my DVD back to me. After much shaking and button pushing I finally got my DVD back. Over the next few days I tried a few other DVDs and they all got stuck and wouldn't easily eject from the tray. The things we take for granted in life such as easily getting your rental DVD back so you can return it. I finally couldn't take the hassle anymore and just put the DVD player back in the box...of course I check the amazon vendor ANT's return policy and it says any defective items should be referred to the manufacturer for warranty...I'm sure that will be a fun adventure for me on a $30 DVD player if I dare to try it. The other very annoying thing I found about this DVD player was that the red light is on all the time and it doesn't appear to change if the power is on or off. I could never even tell when the DVD player was on as I fiddled around trying to get my DVD discs back. The one positive I will give it is it does have a visually appealing design (nice chrome trim) relative to some of the other compact DVD players out there. Though the specifications listed here do not indicate it, the box for the Haier DVD50 which I got says it supports "MPEG4." When I got it, I found that the DVD player supports optical outputs, composite, RGB, and S-Video outputs. I tested it with a DVD which had DivX files in ISO format, and it worked perfectly. Considering the fact that I got it for $29.99, I consider this to be an impressive value. This is an excellent inexpensive DVD for a standard definition television. Read more
