$20 for peace of mind in a rental home over the course of multiple years is nice insurance IMHO. All of the functions did exactly what they claim to do in the instruction manual. You need to consider how spy devices work to make these sensors work for you. The magnetometer detected magnets when placed nearby. They needed to be within a few inches. To be clear, this is NOT detecting a tracking device, but is detecting the magnet holding it to your car (that should not have magnets in say the wheel well). This will not detect an AirTag or any other device unless it is magnetically attached. It might detect the Bluetooth radio signal from it, if you are next to it searching, at the exact moment it checks in, and you are on radio, not magnet mode. This intermittent transmission is covered in the instructions. The red lights bounced off the camera lens creating a laser like effect that I could see. Handy to have that in this combined tool. The radio wave detector was not sensitive enough to find AM/FM radio that surrounds us all. My WiFi router set it off from six inches away. When placed next to a cell phone that has a strong radio MODEM it lit up like fireworks. This will NOT detect a microphone or recording device. It will detect the radio signals sending that content to a remote listener. So a hidden tape recorder that is manually retrieved, or wired to another room, will not be detected because it would not detect the magnets in my computer speakers or mics, too weak. Read more
With all the talk of hidden cameras in AirBNBs, hotel rooms, and well, probably everywhere, we thought it would be interesting to try this hidden camera detector using cameras, trackers, and devices we have at home. It claimed to deliver secure detection of hidden cameras, recorders, GPS trackers, etc, but what we found was that it didn't hit the mark on some of those. The basic RF and infrared modes were inconsistent with the sensitivity and missed devices we concealed well, and also missed some low-power devices. Devices with red LED lights were picked up rather easily when within a few feet. The internet router and Wi-Fi outdoor bridge were picked up at about 6-7 1/2 feet. GPS trackers in various places, about half were detected. We didn't have a device for recording to test it on. I'm not sure that I would feel confident if I were relying on this to seriously detect devices, especially out somewhere where there could be other signals, etc, to cause more interference issues. Good looking tech that was straightforward do use. The instruction was straightforward and you do get a few more features with this besides checking for hidden camera. The red lens is located behind the device and it folds/unfolds with ease. This device also has a flashlight and sound function to use as needed. Recommend bringing to unknown stays to check! Hidden Camera Detector This is a small detector that I tested and was able to pick up our wireless security cameras around the house, although you might get false alarms if the sensitivity is too high. It picked up our Android tracker tags, but you have to point the device directly at them with the sensitivity turned up. I don't have any wireless microphones, so unfortunately couldn't test for that. Be aware that it might pick up other wireless devices like a router. The instructions can be a little challenging, as the "mode button" was confused with the "function button" in the GPS magnetic field section, so just watch out for that. Take some time to get familiar with it and how it works. When we travel with these kinds of devices, I always bring the instructions to show in case airport security has questions. The media could not be loaded. So, this detector does work, but there are a few issues. The wireless signal function seems to work great. In the video I posted, it easily detected my router’s signal. It even did so from about 6 feet away with sensitivity set to medium. This is probably the most effective function this thing has. I don’t have wireless cameras to test it with though. The “infrared” light to detect cameras is essentially just red LEDs with a pop up lens to find reflections on camera lenses. I tested it with my iPhone 15 Pro Max camera lenses, and I had to pass over them several times and directly in front of them no further than a few feet away in order to get the shiny reflection you’re supposed to get. Because of this, if the place you’re staying at has wired surveillance instead of wireless cameras, the signal detection mode is not going to work, leaving you to rely on the terrible lens detecting light mode. The last mode it has is detecting GPS trackers, but it really just detects the magnetic field of these trackers, so it’s open to a lot of interference or false positives.
