hito DT8550BH Infrared Thermometer - Basic functions that work as described

James from GASeptember 8, 2024✓ Verified purchase

This item has the basic functions you would expect, with one additional function named Emissivity (EMS). More on that later. You can set it to measure in C or F, the Red laser beam can be selected on or off, and the backlit display can also be selected on or off. If the backlit display is selected to "Off", and after the 15 second delay to view the measurement expires, the backlight will flash "On" before scanning a new measurement (I think there is a bug in that function). And the instructions don't tell you how to turn off the display (by default it is on), I accidentally discovered how to do that myself. (Select button on right while scanning) While scanning for measurements by holding the trigger, the reading will change almost instantly as the temp of the item measured changes. There is a Max function below the main reading that displays the highest temperature recorded. That may be a nice feature, but more helpful would be Max and Min. The thermometer with batteries included, came well packed in a resealable plastic package. Not like other plastic sealed items that require you to destroy the packaging and possibly damage the unit in order to get access to it. This package can be easily opened and pressed back together. I found this desirable. Emissivity: The setting range for EMS is 0.10-1.00, and there is a table in the manual listing common materials with the corresponding EMS that you need to adjust to correctly measure the temperature of the material. Most materials on the list have emissivity between 0.90 and 1.00, but the temperature will change if the EMS setting is changed. For example, Rock EMS is 0.70, Snow has a range of 0.83-0.90, Oxidized Brass has a range of 0.40-0.80, and Oxidized Aluminum has a range of 0.20-0.40. Changing the EMS setting requires one push for each 0.01 change. For example, if the material is brass which has an EMS of 0.40, that means you have to push 55 times to set the correct EMS. Or you can hold the button for 2 seconds and the EMS setting will scroll up or down. There is no Reset to go back to the default EMS of 0.95, but if you remove the battery, it will reset. Battery Drain with new batteries at 1.62V: Scanning drain = 21.9 mA View reading = 5.9 mA There is zero measurable battery drain when no measurements are taken. The Laser beam does become dim when batteries decrease in voltage. At 1.38V each, the beam is noticeably dimer than New batteries. And at 1.30V it is very difficult to see. So if you are thinking of using rechargeable Nimh batteries, which are typically 1.4V at full charge, and 1.3V after a few days, you may have a difficult time trying to see the Laser Beam. All things considered, I am not very happy with this purchase, but it does function as described, therefore I gave it 3 stars. Read more
