Heavy magnetic knife holder, sharp knives

K. BaleyMarch 1, 2026

I'm a huge fan of Hoshanho knives and cutting boards. IMO, Hoshanho makes some of the best professional-grade products at reasonable prices for the home chef, this magnetic knife holder and knife set is no exception. At the time of this review, the kit was selling for $200 USD, which puts the knife block and 7 knives at about $25/each! This kit comes with the magnetic knife holder that is shaped like a slab of 1-inch-thick wood. The first thing you will notice is that this is HEAVY, probably due to all the magnets in the block. The wood is stained dark and has very beautiful graining. There are two small pieces of wood that you attach to the block using the included screws, they even give you a small screwdriver. The blocks act as feet to hold the board vertically. There are rubber pads on the bottom to keep the block from slipping or marring the counter surface. Note that Hoshanho has a block with a built in V-sharpener at the top, this block does not have the sharpener. The knives are part of their Pao series of knives, which has a dark rough-forged part on the top half of the knife. All the knives in the kit have full tangs and are attached to the walnut handles with three brass pins. They all have a brass hole in the end of the handle that you can attach a lanyard. Each knife is well balanced, and the handles have a gentle curve that fits the hands well. The blades are double beveled; my wife is left-handed and I'm right-handed and we can each use the knives perfectly. These blades are SHARP. The blades hold their edge very well, I've had other Hoshanho knives for over a year and I've never had to sharpen them. I always use a strop before putting the knives away and I've used a steel periodically to maintain their sharp edges. Make sure to immediately hand wash (never put in a dishwasher) and dry the knives after each use. Depending on use, these may require more maintenance, specially the chopping knives. The larger knives all have a curved blade, so you can use them in a rocking motion to cut or chop. The 6-inch cleaver has plenty of weight for cutting through bones. The 6-inch chopper is a tad lighter and can be used for more precision chops. The 5.5-inch and 5.9-inch vegetable and Viking knives are heavy enough for chopping even the hardest fruits and vegetables, while proving more precise cuts if you are butchering meat. The smaller knives are for when you need more precise cutting, such as separating cuts of meat from the bone without losing any meat or more general kitchen cutting. Included is a 6.7-inch boning knife, a 6-inch utility knife and a 5.5-inch fruit knife. The fruit knife has a very sharp point, perfect for piercing gourds, squash and pumpkins. The magnets are STRONG; I tried shaking the holder with the knives attached and they would not fall off. Removing each knife from the block requires two hands, one to hold the block and the other to pull the handle away from the block. I use a "peeling" motion to remove the knives, pull the handle part from the block first then angle it away until the tips detach from the block. Be very careful to stay away from the other blades while pulling to prevent cuts. Hoshanho takes great care in packaging, so the knives arrive to you the same way they left the factory. Each knife has one or two plastic point guards, each knife is then encased in a form fitting plastic sleeve that covers the blade area. Each knife is them encased in a plastic sleeve that covers the entire knife which is then encased in a cardboard sleeve to further protect the blade. All the knives are then wrapped in bubble wrap and encased in an inner cardboard box. The magnetic knife holder and its feet are encased in bubble wrap before being placed in an inner cardboard box. Both inner cardboard boxes are then encased in the outer cardboard box. This attention to detail is why I've never received any damaged product from Hoshanho. Read more

A rugged, dramatic knife set that outperformed every expectation.

SEBASHMarch 6, 2026

The media could not be loaded. I’ve been eyeing those famous brand knife sets for a while, but every time I looked at the price tag, I had to remind myself that money does not grow on trees. Then I stumbled across this 8 piece set, and that was the easiest “Add to Cart” decision I’ve made all year. There are good knives, there are great knives… and then there’s this set, the kind that makes you pause mid‑unboxing and say, “Oh wow. These are serious.” Everything was packed with real care. The acacia magnetic knife board was wrapped in tissue, and the two legs attached easily with the included screws and screwdriver. It took just a couple of minutes to put together, and once it was standing, it stayed put, no wobbling, no tipping, no shifting when placing or removing the knives. The magnetic hold is strong enough to feel intentional, not decorative. It looks like something you’d find in a chef’s cabin tucked deep in the mountains, solid, dramatic, and unapologetically masculine. It doesn’t just hold the knives; it presents them. In daily use, the magnetic block holds the knives securely, but it does have a pretty firm clack when the blade connects. It’s not a deal breaker, just something to know so you don’t jump the first time you hear it. The magnets are strong, so if you pull a knife off at the wrong angle, you can scratch the wood, nothing dramatic, just the kind of thing you learn after a couple of uses. Once you get the hang of lifting straight off, everything stays clean and smooth. The knives were protected like royalty: plastic covers, cardboard sleeves, tip guards, and bubble wrap between the knives. It was refreshing to open a box and feel like my hands and fingers were actually considered in the packaging design. I felt completely safe pulling everything out. These are not flimsy, stamped out, lightweight kitchen toys. These are hand forged, high carbon stainless steel blades with real craftsmanship behind them. Each blade has its own angle and purpose, and the shading and tapering aren’t just for looks, they help food fall off the blade instead of sticking. For the first time, cutting felt smooth, controlled, and honestly enjoyable. I felt like a chef with years of experience, not someone wrestling with dull bargain bin knives. They’re sharp enough to glide through tomatoes and sturdy enough to handle dense cuts without hesitation. What stood out once I started using them was how natural they felt, the weight sits forward just enough to help the blade do the work, and the motion stays smooth instead of choppy. I didn’t have to fight the knife or readjust my grip every few seconds. Everything stayed comfortable, steady, and predictable, which is exactly what you want when you’re prepping a lot of food. And after several full prep sessions, the blades still had that same confident, clean bite they had on day one, the kind of edge that tells you these knives are going to hold up to real, everyday use. The walnut handles are full tang with rivets, and they even have a hole at the end if you prefer to hang a knife while working outdoors at the BBQ. They’re slightly larger than the cheap knives I’ve used in the past, but in a way that fills the hand comfortably. The grip feels secure, the contouring is thoughtful, and I didn’t experience any hand fatigue. They’re not dishwasher safe, which is normal for high carbon blades, but they washed up easily by hand and didn’t spot or streak after drying. The whole set has a rugged, manly look, perfect for someone who enjoys BBQing and smoking meats as much as I do, but still refined enough for everyday kitchen cooking. What I appreciate most is the balance of everything: heavy duty without being clunky, beautiful without being delicate. After using them, I’m honestly thrilled I found this set. It feels dramatically high quality, built to last, and crafted with pride. You can tell the workmanship wasn’t rushed or compromised. I look forward to many years of putting these knives to work. Outstanding knives.

Michael M.February 27, 2026

I’m genuinely impressed with the HOSHANHO 8 Pieces Butcher Kitchen Knife Set with Magnetic Block. I have quite a few great knives from this company and these are just as good. Right out of the box, you can tell these knives are solid and well made. The hand forged high carbon stainless steel blades have a substantial weight to them, but they’re still very well balanced and comfortable to use. Full tang construction wrapped in attractive wood and brass rivets give these knives solid utility. The sharpness is outstanding. I’ve used the chef’s knife for vegetables, the butcher knife for trimming meat, and the smaller utility knife for everyday prep work, all of them glide through food with very little effort. The edge retention has been great so far; I haven’t needed to sharpen them yet after several weeks of regular cooking. One of my favorite features is the magnetic knife block. It’s not only functional but also looks fantastic on the countertop. The open design makes it easy to grab the knife you need, and it feels secure, the magnets are strong enough to hold each knife firmly in place. The handles are comfortable and feel sturdy, with no looseness or rough spots. The overall craftsmanship gives this set a premium feel without the premium price tag. If you’re looking for a versatile, sharp, and visually appealing knife set for home cooking, this set is a great choice and a fantastic value, especially with the current $50 coupon. I would absolutely recommend it for anyone upgrading their kitchen tools. Read more
