Easily connect older z-wave devices and some Wi-Fi devices for local control

Michael HaneyFebruary 21, 2026✓ Verified purchase

I bought this to replace my Vera Home Controller since it no longer supports Alexa. I bought a LinkNLink controller with z wave antenna first but that was impossible to set-up ( more on that below). The Hubitat was easy to set up and to get my older (7-8 years old) z-wave devices to connect. Connecting to Alexa was also easy. I set up all my z wave switches, plug modules, and locks. The app works well but you can only set up rules ( scenes, routines, etc on other controllers) on their website. Setting up the rules was easy once you fumble through the first one. Integration with Alexa works great being able to control all the devices through her. Setting up virtual switches was easy as well so that Alexa could run the rules. I also connected my Wi-Fi devices (kasa plugs (tplink) direct to the Hubitat so that it does not need the cloud to run the rules. Pretty minor but I like the local control. Blink cameras and Ecobee thermostats and such still connect via the cloud. For the LinkNLink box SE I could never get my LinkNLink system to connect any of my devices and the app would not show the full controller functionality like to should. Using the monitor interface with the remote on the LinkNLink system is painful at best. It might be very powerful but the set-up was a little more high level than I was willing to invest the time in. I’d definitely recommend the Hubitat for local control tool of z-wave and certain Wi-Fi devices for its ease of setup with the devices and Alexa. Read more

The Ultimate Home Automation Hub for Power Users and Beginners Alike

RyanDecember 29, 2024✓ Verified purchase

If you’re serious about home automation and want a system that can handle anything you throw at it, this hub is an absolute must-have. It’s incredibly powerful and versatile, but let me start with a fair warning: to truly unlock its full potential, you’ll need to be somewhat technical. That said, the fantastic online community is a game-changer. They’ve created guides, shared ideas, and answered every question I’ve had, making it possible for anyone with some patience and curiosity to succeed. Now, onto what this device can do. The short answer? If you can dream it, it can do it. Here’s a rundown of some of the endless possibilities: 1. Integrate Everything: It works seamlessly with a huge range of devices—Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, and even older protocols like IR with the right integrations. Lights, thermostats, locks, sensors, cameras—you name it, this hub ties them all together into one cohesive ecosystem. 2. Advanced Automation: From basic scheduling to highly complex “if-this-then-that” scenarios, the automation options are endless. For example, I’ve set it up so that my outdoor lights turn on at sunset, my thermostat adjusts automatically based on motion detection, and even my coffee maker starts brewing as soon as I disarm the alarm in the morning. 3. Local Control: Unlike many other systems, this hub focuses on local processing, which means faster response times and greater reliability. Plus, you don’t have to rely on cloud services, giving you added security and control over your devices. 4. Custom Dashboards: The ability to create personalized dashboards is amazing. I’ve set up a central touchscreen in my kitchen where I can control everything in my house at a glance, from lights to cameras to sensors. It’s super convenient and looks pretty cool too! 5. Energy Savings: With smart automation, I’ve been able to optimize energy usage. For instance, lights and fans turn off automatically when no one is in a room, and the thermostat adjusts when doors or windows are open. 6. Enhanced Security: I’ve integrated it with door locks, motion sensors, and cameras to create a comprehensive security system. I get instant notifications if anything unusual happens, and I can automate actions like turning on lights and sounding alarms if a door is opened unexpectedly at night. 7. Endless Customization: This is where the real power lies. You can write custom rules, create virtual devices, and even use third-party apps and integrations to expand its capabilities. Whether it’s voice control with Alexa or Google Assistant, integrating with other platforms like HomeKit, or creating your own scripts, the sky’s the limit. While the setup can be a bit overwhelming at first, the online community and support resources make it manageable. If you’re willing to put in the effort, this hub will reward you with a home automation experience that’s second to none. Bottom line: Whether you’re a power user who loves tinkering or a beginner looking for a robust system that can grow with your needs, this device is an incredible investment. It’s fast, reliable, and capable of things I didn’t even think were possible before. If you’re ready to take full control of your smart home, this is the hub to get! Read more

Seems great -- just not for me

MichaelFebruary 23, 2026✓ Verified purchase

I don't think there is any other corner of current, consumer technology implementation that's more frustrating to deal with than home automation. I came upon this hub through (what seemed like) endlessly Sisyphean ordeals of trying to figure out the best path toward a clean, stable, simple set-up. And by some measure, this hub **can** -- in theory -- work as the foundation to a pretty slick architecture. The concept is elegant: yes, of course, work on the basis of protocol, not brand-specificity. And get individual devices OFF the WiFi network. Those are fantastic ideas, and the Hubitat does, I think, do a pretty nice job of presenting a great interface for achieving almost any possible scenario you want. The control plane is reasonably intuitive. What's NOT (yet) intuitive, unfortunately, are all the steps and nuances that may be required to pull specific devices in, and what it might take for them to remain in stable operation. And I say this from the perspective of someone who earns a living as a solution architect/software engineer. I get all the fundamental concepts and I'm not afraid of complexity. I just don't want to have to spend lots of time and effort on something like this when I can land on a complete set up, inside a closed ecosystem (like Hue for example), that's simple and reliable, and costs me very little in terms of set-up anxiety. If you truly enjoy the process of getting creative with your home automation architecture, and want maximum control to free yourself from brand propriety, then this is definitely your solution. If you just want something to work and don't want to have to learn an entirely new skill-set just to make your lights turn on when you push a button -- this may not be what you're after. Read more
