Johnston and Murphy Men’s XC4 Dress Shoes

Well-designed, comfortable and stylish. This brand might show my age (as it is middle-aged) but is of high quality. The price was fair and the size and fit were just right. Read more

Most comfortable dress shoes I’ve ever owned

I’m very happy with the comfort level of these. My previous dress shoes would leave me sore after an hour or two. I wore these for 6 hours or more, standing the whole time, and still felt great. They’re expensive but I’m glad that I went for them. I am confident they’ll last me a long time. The sizing was accurate. Read more

J&M doesn't make 'em like they used to. Not a fan of the "removable insert makes it a wide size" concept.

SO here's the deal. It's an ok shoe. But for $200, it should be better than ok. I bought these hoping to replace an old pair of J&M Aristocrafts made in the USA cap toes. Those have seen a little wear, not a lot but had a minor cut on the toe. I normally wear a size that is wide or extra wide. J&M does not offer this in a wide/extra wide, but their website describes it as having a removalbe insert that turns it into a wide. My experience was that while the room in the shoe was slightly more, it's not the same as putting a wide size shoe on. And since the recommendation was to go to the next higher size in a medium width, the show was simultaneously too large and too small. It was narrower than hoped, and longer than needed. Removing the insert helped, but then the shoe just had a sloppy fit up and down, and front to back, combined with a snug fit on the side. So didn't really work. It also did not look as good as my old Aristocrafts. I thought the rubber sole with the fake rubber stiching looked cheesy and the leather itself just didn't have the sheen of my USA J&M's. Despite the rubber sole, my old aristocrafts were more comfortable and had better cushion than these brand new rubber soles. I guess they just don't make 'em like they used to. They looked better than a pair of Eccos in terms of the leather, but not as good as the higher end J&Ms nor any of my Allen Edmunds. Granted, they cost less that those shoes. Finally summary, you get what you pay for. I could live with the leather quality being a little lower at the lower price point, but the fit just wasn't good for me, with my wide feet, and the cushioning was not as good as the old cork padded leather sole. I'll probably either order J&M's in their top of the line USA made Georgetown II cap toe, or just go get some Allen Edmunds Park Avenues. To me, the value just isn't there on these particular J&M's. I stopped into a Macy's and all they stock is the chinese and indian J&M's too. They all looked cheap to me. At about $200 for these, I felt like they were overpriced by about $60-$80 compared to similar shoes. I'm a shoe snob. If you're not, try some better shoes - then you will be. On a cost per wear basis...you'll be money ahead, comfort ahead and style ahead buying better shoes. But if you are on a short term cash flow constraint, these are ok...not "bad"...just not very impressive. And if that's your situation...you might look to other brands and save more short term cash. Quality shoes that look good and are very comfortable

I cycle these with a pair of rockports every other day to dry them out. Initially I was wearing them daily and they’d last 4-6 months. I walk 12-15 miles a night on hard flooring and by rotating these they generally hold up for 9 months which is the longest I’ve had any shoe last under those conditions. Foot sweat is the biggest issue; they keep water out but if you sweat a lot it will bleed through and be visible on the exterior. Given there is no ventilation on leather shoes this may or may not cause issues for you. Read more
