The grip is smooth similar to most kettle bells, unlike dumbbells which have knurled grips. These open like a George Foreman Grill and snap onto the dumbbell handle with the hinge at the bottom. I bought this bc my building's gym has lots of weights but no kettle bells. This is good for some exercises, a little unwieldy for others, and unusable for more still. And while it fits the 10lb weight in my gym's set, it does not fit the 15 lb weight, which is frustrating. I discovered that after I'd used it so cannot send it back. Also, you really need to make sure that it's snapped closed tightly each time because it's not always apparent that it's locked. Dangerous as hell if you pick it up after you've left it unlocked. Always check if you're changing weights. Would suggest that manufacturers have a visual, two lines on the base and the clasp that line up, so there is a cue. Read more
