A good value

Don't let the colorful, toy-like appearance of this harmonica fool you. It comes with a label reminding you that "this is a musical instrument, not a toy", and such it is: a standard-size, 10-hole diatonic in the key of "C". It's made from mostly plastic, but is of sturdy construction, and relatively light in weight. The reeds and screws are brass. The reeds aren't absolutely pitch-perfect, but sound good. It comes with a rather thin and cheap transparent vinyl pouch for storage. It was playing one of these instruments (as an adult) that got me excited about learning the harmonica. I've since bought one for each of my children, and they love them. All things considered, this is a good harmonica for the price. If you need an inexpensive harmonica to try out, carry around, or give to a child who's interested in the harmonica, one that you won't make you scream if it accidentally gets damaged, this is the one for you. Perfect for a Toddler

The sound of this harmonica is surprisingly clear and pretty, for it's appearance. It is just a very lightweight piece of plastic, but when you blow on it, the prettiest sounds are produced. We have all had fun trying our hand at playing it, and although my 1 1/2 year old granddaughter hasn't quite mastered the art of blowing through it to produce sound, it has been hilarious watching her try. She thinks the sound is coming from the person blowing it, rather than the instrument itself, and she tries to reproduce the sound vocally---very funny to watch. I am sure the day will soon come when she figures it out--just hope I am there to enjoy the look on her face when she does. A good quality item--can't rate it highly enough. Read more

These are NOT toys. These are the real-deal.

I have been playing harmonicas for 55 years. I specialize in blues-harmonica. Considering the price of these Hohner "Clearly Colorful" harmonicas which are only available in the key off C, these are super-excellent for accompanying a blues-guitarist playing in the key of G. Buy these, because these are absolutely genuine musical instruments. Read more

Sounds like the Hohner I got back in the 70's.

I still have a Hohner pocket harmonica that was given to me back in the mid 70's (not a toy)and this it sounds very similar to this toy Hohner. I purchased this as a stocking stuffer for my two and a half year old. She loves it!! My only problem is the random color that was sent, is blue. Can't win them all I guess. She doesn't seem to mind anyway. This "mouth-harp" sounds great. If you like to backpack, and are overly concerned with weight, This may be a good lightweight option to your traditional metal "mouth-harp". My main concern was this harp would sound like a toy, but it does not. These would be great for kids birthday party-favors. Good product at a fair price. Our daughter loves to take this with her when she spends the night with her grandmother. If the harp holds up well over the next year, I will update my review and I may upgrade to 5 stars. Read more

Great gift for kids or toddlers

This is a nice sounding harmonica! It took a while for our 2 year old to figure out that you have to blow hard to make sound but she just cracks up now when she does! Its a lot of fun! We got it for our child to introduce instruments and have to say it will last - it is durable. Sounds nice, easy to use, clean and seems very well made. We had to youtube some videos to learn how to use it (blowing out and sucking in creates different notes) but it wasnt too hard and both Mom & Dad also like belting out tunes. Its become a fun activity. I have no complaints! Great purchase! Read more

Perfect starter instrument for kids

I bought this to share with my 3 year old daughter. She loves playing it and had no trouble holding it. The sound is very nice, at least to my ears. I don't know how durable this will prove to be, it's got fine cracks in the plastic already, but of course it's very inexpensive. I think this is a perfect instrument to start kids with. It's a good size for little hands, simple to play, not terribly loud and you really can't play any unpleasant sour notes unlike our electric keyboard. My daughter's no virtuouso, but she's figured out the mechanics of playing it and really enjoys it and so do I. Read more

Not good for toddlers--cheap quality.

Bought this for my 3 yr old twins and I am not impressed. The sound is good, but the effort it takes to blow into the harmonica makes it seem low quality. I've owned solid metal harmonicas before and you need just barely breathe into them and it makes a sound. Not this one. Maybe because it is plastic, or maybe just because it is built cheaply. I am an adult and even I have to blow extra hard on the ends of this to hear the highest and lowest notes. The middle of the harmonica works decent, but still requires more blowing effort than a good quality harmonica. I think you get what you pay for and I wish I had just purchased a solid metal harmonica. I think the plastic really takes away from the instrument's ability. Read more

Surprisingly good tone and quality

Surprisingly great and accurate tone. The outside plastic looks cheap and flimsy, yes. But it's made for kids so colors are important. The plastic is decent enough quality to withstand the inevitable drops and tantrum throws. The smooth plastic also makes it easy to clean. The actual tone producing parts are pretty great for the price. You'll probably play around with it more than your little one does (hard for anyone under 5 to discipline their breath enough to blow into those tiny holes properly). For the price you can't really complain about anything here. Read more
