Nice all purpose knife for the home cook

I love to cook. And I would love to come here and give an indepth review of knives, but what home chef is buying an array of knives to try out? You invest in what you think you'll like and you go from there. Here's what I can tell you about this KitchenAid chef's knife. It weighs just over 7 oz. according to my kitchen scale. I'm not sure this is heavy or light in the grand scheme of things. But it feels light and nimble. I like how it sits in my hand. The balance appears to be at the heel or maybe just a bit forward of the heel on the blade side of the knife. The oval handle is comfortable but may be bit small if you have very large hands ( I do not). I am not sure yet how grippable the oval handle will be when it gets wet. So, I'm using it only for vegetables and not for, say, deboning a whole slippery raw chichen. Overall though I am finding that I am reaching for this knife more and more when I am cooking. This tells me that subconsciously it works for me. I will also say that this is a beautiful looking knife. It comes exceptionally nicely packaged which makes it immediately giftable. It would make a good wedding gift for younger newlyweds or a nice "first serious knife" for anyone setting up house. Read more

Beautiful and razor sharp

This 8" Chef Knife comes beautifully, and very carefully, packaged. There is absolutely no chance of damage to knife, our human, during shipping or opening. I have small female hands and I love the feel of this knife. It isn't a light knife nor is it too heavy. It has a nice balance to it when in use. It really is razor sharp. I just finished chopping toasted walnuts and this knife made quick work of the job. The walnuts are now in nice pieces for baking with a minimum of debris bits and dust; just nice pieces that I don't have to sort out of that powdery dust you can have after chopping with a lesser knife. This knife is really beautiful in both blade and handle. The knife description clearly states that this knife is NOT FOR THE DISHWASHER. This is a non-issue for me; but if it is for you, this isn't the knife for you. The handle is made of pakkawood and the blade of Damacus steel. Frankly, I am not an expert in knives, so I have no idea why a pakkawood handle and 67 layers of Damacus steel are so special. However, I am a wife, mother and grandmother that has been cooking since she was seven (literally down on the farm) and I do know what it takes to call a knife a "good knife." This is a very good knife and I expect to get years of use from it. Read more

Married tang, Damascus blade

The knife has a nice box for presentation. It has a sleeve, inside is a magnetic closure heavy box that makes for an enjoyable experience that feels high end, similar to opening something Apple related. It arrives sharp and ready to use. The instructions tell you have to care for the knife by not soaking in water, not placing in a dish washer, and how to oil the handle monthly and with what products. I was actually kind of disappointed with this knife quality wise. I was expecting chief quality and feel this falls short. I have similar married tang Damascus knives that are the same quality level and I only paid $50 for them here on Amazon. If I would have saw this knife in person at a retail store for this price ($180 at time of review) I would have taken a hard pass on it. Read more

Great Knife - Great Shower/Wedding Gift Idea

One of the most important tools for food preparation is a high quality, versatile knife. The KitchenAid 5” forged Santoku knife is just that. It is very sharp, making the tasks of chopping, slicing, dicing quick and easy. This knife is well made and has good balance. It is easy to use and works in a wide variety of applications. The blonde Pakkawood handle is very attractive. The dimples on the blade improve the ease of slicing and aids in the food separating from the blade. The knife is made of high-quality steel and with proper care should last a lifetime. Like any quality knife, this should not be put in the dishwasher. The bouncing around in the dishwasher will dull the blade and can damage it. Simple wash with warm water and towel dry. Be sure to store properly. The Santoku style knife is very versatile and can handle most food preparations jobs. I would not use it to cut through bones and I prefer a filet knife for cleaning fish. Other than that, the Santoku knife can handle most other jobs. This would make an excellent shower/wedding gift. Read more

What An Excellent Knife!

The media could not be loaded. This is an exceptionally well made and lovely example of a Santoku knife, of which I currently know little. A bit of reading informs me that it's exceptional for chopping and slicing. I've used a chefs knife for these tasks for years, but I'm branching out. And I like good knives. This example is made of Damascus steel, with a Pakkawood grip. It's exceptionally sharp, the sharpest I've seen on a new knife. You could shave with it, except the shape is wrong. :-) The packing of the knife was also exceptionally thorough. Nicely protected both the blade and the humans. I've included a short video of me using the knife for the first time. Notice that I start by trying to rock it, muscle memory of using a chef knife. It doesn't work that way. You can see the sharpness and fine balance as I chop. Not too bad for a first try. Read more
