Inadequate or really dirty air filters can strain the fan in an HVAC system and shorten it’s life or cause it to burn out completely. Not enough filtration allows dust and dirt to accumulate in the fan and system. Too much restriction can overload the fan. It’s all about flow resistance and filtration. Recommendations on changing HVAC filters run from every thirty days if you use cheap thin filters to as high as once every twelve months if you use expensive, washable, filters. Personally I can’t see taking a chance with the cheap filters when replacing a fan can easily cost $500 - $1000. Whole units can cost thousands. And I’m not convinced the washable ones are effective enough. An air filter’s minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) rating measures how effectively the filter stops dust and other contaminants from passing through the filter and into the air stream. MERV ratings are from 1-16. The higher MERV ratings trap smaller particles than filters with lower MERV ratings, but higher is not always better. A higher MERV rating than what your system calls for can actually impair its performance and put excessive strain on the system's fan. Our system calls for a minimum MERV rating of 10 or higher. I’ve pretty much settled on MERV ratings of 11-13 for our house HVAC system. I think that’s a good balance between filtration and resistance. I change filters every other month. The cost of these MERV 11 filters is less than the cost of the filters I’ve been buying at the local home supply center. The quality is about the same. If you want a MERV 11 filters, these are sturdy and they fit as expected and are easy to install. My rating system: 5 stars..... Very good, recommended. 4 stars..... Better than average. 3 stars..... Average, nothing especially good or bad. 2 stars..... Less than average, not recommended. 1 star ..... Junk, do not buy. Read more

It has half of the baffles of my filtret 1600 filter and twice the baffles of my filtret basic filtres. I've been using the filtret 1600 filters because of the claimed filtration all the way up to airborn viruses. How do you measure if that's working in a home envrionment? You can't. Now I just put one of these Kleenex branded filters in and guess what? There's no way of telling if it's performing better or worse than the filtret 1600. I'm going to say that since it has half of the corrugation baffles as the filtret 1600, that it's filtering about half as well (that's not a scientific measurement) and I'll say that since it's twice of the corrugation baffles that it's filtering twice as good as my filtret basic filters (again...not scientific) It's a filter. It fits my furnace and it's a name brand. What else can you say. 3-stars. No furnace filter brand gets 5-stars from me and they'd only get 4 stars if they were $15-$20.00 cheaper. They're all clowns when it comes to pricing. It's just a cardboard frame with some baffeled material in the middle. Furnace filters are the "ink cartridges" of the HVAC world. WAY OVER PRICED.
