I build and sell custom knives as a hobby but honestly my knives are to nice to use in the field. These knives are a great value and a work horse . Read more
Both knives are great knives. They deserve a 5 star, but due to two flaws, I just cannot do it.... I wish they had a 4.5 or 4.9 rating... Please read, because these knives are great and worthy of any hunt! I have used them on Whitetails and Ferrell Pigs in Texas to Caribou, Sitka Blacktail Deer and Bear in Alaska. The blades are top of the line and have an enduring sharpness to them you will not find with other knives. Just for the quality of the blade and handle I would expect to pay much more than what I got them for. I am so impressed with the blades that I purchased another as a gift for my son. Both knives have outstanding grips and are well balanced. I really like the way they feel in my hands. You can just feel the quality... The caping knife has become my favorite blade. It is outstanding for delicate work such as removing the anus and musk glands. It is also extremely easy to keep sharp. The Skinner/Gut hook - This blade is extremely balanced and is excellent for skinning. It has a nice curve to it making it easy to sharpen. Out of all of my knives this one just feels natural in my hands. I love the forefinger trigger grip. It enhances the control of the blade and hands down after using it, I believe every long blade should have it. So why not a 5 star rating??? - The gut hook is too shallow. It works, but of all of the gut hooks I have used this one just doesn't seem to do the job either efficiently or easily. Not sure if it is due to how narrow it is or the design... but for the most part I found it almost useless. I thought it was just mine, but I skinned two mulleys with my son's set and had the same problem. They just seem to grab the hide rather than cut it with a zipping action as most gut hooks... This is not a big issue to me, because, I have skinned enough animals to do with with/without a gut hook. To me they are niceties, not necessities. The set was designed for whitetail use, and whitetails seem to have finer hair and thinner skin than mulleys to me... and just to set the record clear, I had the same problem on the whitetail deer... - The sheath has two problems. 1 - My caping knife cut through it's sheath. I believe this problem might just be with my sheath, which is a quality control issue, because my son's sheath does not have the same problem. My caping knife cut through the sheath within the first week hunting. The caping knife sheath is attached at the top to the Skinner sheath and riveted on the bottom. My caping sheath seems like it is a little to long, causing it to have a natural curve... which in returned caused the caping knife's sheath to bend and the caping knife to cut through the sheath while I was inserting it into the sheath. It is perfectly safe. because the knife protrudes between the two sheaths. It is only noticeable to me. The knife is secure, but just not the way it was designed. 2 - The leather snaps for retaining the knives are not sewn or riveted on. On the first hunt while cleaning a deer, the skinner sheath's snap and little leather belt came off. It took me a long time to find it since it is pretty small. This problem is on both blades and my son's set as well. I recommend if you get the knife set, secure these on with either a small leather rivet or sew them on. It would suck to loose one of these expensive blades in the field... I know I hit it hard on a few items, but the knives are my favorite. If you get a set, you will see why. They are well worth the money and boy they look as sharp as they are! Happy hunting! Read more
