Excellent lock.

Yes, it weighs a bit, but if you have a small enough waistline (mine is 28in, the chain is 32in), then you can transport it that way, or wrap it around your seatpost (this is the way I carry mine). Honestly it doesn't weigh much more than my U-Lock though. Anyway, I live in LA and this is great for when you need to make a few stops and leave your bike for a couple hours or so. At night, I store my bike in my home, so I don't worry about having to leave it out overnight. But I have been to more sketchy areas and left my bike locked with this lock, and I can say that as long as you know what you are doing, you will be fine with this lock. I make sure to wrap it through my frame and wheel and then tie it before actually locking it. As far as locking and unlocking, honestly it's not that hard. I saw others complaining that their keys get stuck, etc etc. It says right there on the little attention label attached with the keys that you need to make sure the key is inserted to the bottom of the cylinder before turning it. Nothing too complicated about that. I was able to get in and out of the lock with no issues. If it tends to get stuck, you could also probably put a drop of lube in it and it should be fine. That's what I do to my older U-lock (that I also use in conjunction with this lock for my back tire. I feel so much more comfortable locking my bike and leaving it to shop or do whatever I'm going to do. I don't get any sense that my bike is going to be gone when I get back. I do see other people with much nicer-looking bikes who do really poor jobs at locking them up, and it saddens me, because I know that if a thief had to choose between my bike and that person's, they'd choose theirs based on how poorly it's secured. Kryptonite has really good information on their site about locking and securing your bike. Not to mention, they will even suggest what type of lock(s) you should get based on the type of area you live in, things like that. There is so much good information out there on YouTube and places like that. Obviously if a person really wants your bike, they will get it no matter what, but you can do your part to make it as difficult as possible. Put up a good fight. Speaking of fights, this chain also makes very good weapon too, if someone were trying to walk up on you in a dodgy part of town, you could definitely whack'em with this. It's that sturdy and heavy. Overall, 5 out of 5 stars. Great lock for the price, and for where I live and tend to go. Wouldn't recommend this one if you live some place like San Francisco or NY though (depending what part). At least not without a second lock of choice. But in most parts of Los Angeles (except maybe Santa Monica or North Hollywood, HUGE theft target areas) with this lock and proper locking technique, you should be fine. Read more

The Best Budget Lock! (Especially for Students)

My experience: I recently got a new electric scooter, and decided to get a lock with it to replace my old U-Lock from Masterlock. I must say that this Kryptonite chain lock is insanely well-built! I am not a fanatic in locks, but I can definitely tell that this is a great quality lock, and I have had no issues with being able to lock my scooter anywhere with it. Pros: The lock is very versatile. The chain design makes it extremely easy to lock and ensures that thieves have trouble cutting it open, especially if you make well-designed loops around areas around the scooter that are very hard to physically access hands-on. The lock comes with a spare key and it is relatively light for a metal chain, weighing around 5 pounds or so. I bought this lock for around $40, and I must say it is definitely a great budget lock, especially for students who have just bought a new e-bike or scooter and are afraid of thieves! Cons: The lock isn’t the most portable compared to a U-Lock. For U-locks, you can easily hook onto a bike or scooter while riding; however, chain locks are a lot different in that case and require you to at least have a backpack or bag on the handlebars as you ride. This could be difficult for some people, but as a student it's perfect for me since I always carry my backpack everywhere! Another con is definitely the length of the chain, which gives some limitations when trying to lock it around areas that you may find more secure. It is only 2.5 feet, so if you have enough money, I highly recommend spending for the extra length. Just remember to have the portability to carry it! Verdict: This lock is great, and I highly recommend it if you’re on a budget. If you are someone who is still skeptical, you can always invest in another Kryptonite lock or possibly just buy one of these variants with a longer chain capability. I lock it around my school every day and have no hassle with taking it in and out. Remember to always lock your belongings, especially your e-vehicles! Read more

VERY sturdy lock, but heavy and with very finicky key

I bought this lock after a recommendation from the Lockpicking Lawyer on Youtube (his is a slightly different model than this one), and I have to say that if you're valuing sturdiness over all else, then this is definitely the lock for you. However, that comes with a few caveats. First and most importantly, it is WAY heavier and bulkier than I expected it to be. If you're getting a lock for a road bike where weight is important, this is not the lock for you. This also makes it a bit uncomfortable to wrap around the seatpost like other locks, but it is doable. That said, it also puts the center of gravity much higher and can cause your bike to tip over when using a kickstand. Personally, I've started putting in my right pannier that I always have on my bike, and that seems to be working well. The other thing is that the key is super finicky and doesn't like to enter or sit properly in the lock when opening and closing. Combined with the thick plastic bow cover, this has almost destroyed the leather key organizer that I've been using for years. This also isn't the type of lock where you can leave the key in the lock while you ride, and take it with you when you chain up the bike. When I tried this, the key seemed somewhat secure, but fell out almost immediately when I began to ride. The key also doesn't seem to be as well made as the lock itself, which makes me concerned that it may bend or break in the keyhole down the line. All this is enough for me to remove a star. Overall, the sturdiness of the lock outweighs the issues I had with the key, and if you can deal with the weight, I'd still feel comfortable recommending this lock. Read more
