Our kids were in a pinewood derby and were able to use some of the weights for their cars, but what we were really after was the graphite, which worked like a charm, though it’s my opinion all powdered graphite works the same. The adhesive weights were nice for calibrating our scales, but for design we preferred hidden weights or the tungsten putty. Read more
It's not pinewood derby time, but I thought I'd get ahead of the game. We used weighted fishing equipment last year and hoped for the best, but despite our design, didn't turn out too well. I was happy to see they have a kit with multiple different weight options and includes the graphite wheel lubricant. Weights can be placed on the bottom of the cars and the corrected shape and size is imperative to giving your derby car the extra pull to move faster. I'll update my post once we've done our derby race with it in the spring but this is a nice starter kit. Read more
The Kypikosp Pinewood Car Derby kit delivers a good assortment of weights that let you fine‑tune your car’s weight and balance. You get twelve pre‑shaped metal weights in two sizes, plus two ½ oz tungsten putty pieces that can be molded and pressed into place. The graphite lubricant comes in a handy applicator; the small-gauge tip dispenses a smooth, consistent puff. Very functional! The weights adhered well to the car, though each was a touch heavier than the label suggested. Because of this, weighing the car after every addition is essential. Overall, the kit is a nice offering because everything you need is included in one package. However, it feels a bit on the expensive side for what you get. Read more
The case that the items came in was completely broken. That isn't really a big deal since the case is only the packaging and not what you are paying to have. The actual weights do what they should: weigh the car down. They have a sticky backing on them and the putty weighs it down too. The graphite bottle is where this kit really shines. It has a great applicator which gets the graphite where you need it - in between the wheels, under the nail head, and on the axles. The rubber cap you can see in my pictures was also a nice surprise that I haven't seen on other bottles. The way it's designed works great and makes it nearly impossible to lose which is nice in something that small. When opening the bottle, it's a little tight, but I think that's what you want in this case. As a side note, unrelated to the actual product but useful information for anyone looking to do well in a derby race... my advice is (if your rules allow) polish your axles and run a rail rider (drift 1" inward over 4') with the opposite wheel lifted a tiny bit. We wet sand & polish our axles from 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000, 2500, 3000, and 3500 grit sandpaper using a drill and a $7 pack of sandpaper I got on Amazon... and we have come in first or second in every race over the last ten years (several different kids)... it makes a huge difference. There's plenty after messing up with the glue ( DO NOT USE SUPERGLUE) which will slide down the axle and then stick the tires! Don't make my error. With that, I lubricated all the tires and axles and had ENOUGH lube to cover the second wave of tires/axles. Nothing is more sad than ruining the car. But these weights and lube have NO issues and were the most delightful part of the install. The tires definitely spin 10-15 seconds I could've gotten more if I sanded down the axles more but I wasn't doing it as long the second time. Cheers Read more
This set of pinewood derby weights is exactly what our shows in the listing. The weights are pretty accurate and they've got double sided tape on the back to make it a little easier to attach to the car. The tape isn't bad and should hold for an afternoon, but if it needs to go longer than that, I'd use glue. I especially appreciate the weighted putty, as it allows you to completely fine tune the weight, or get weight onto a car that doesn't have much space for it. Overall this is a good kit and will do everything it needs to. Read more
This kit includes: 12 total pieces - 4 pcs of 1/2 ounce, 8 pcs of 1/4 ounce, and 2 pcs 1/2 ounce tungsten putty weights and 1 bottle of 50ml graphite lubricating powder. This is perfect for our Cub Scout Pinewood Derby Workshop we host every year. The graphite is easy to apply with the thin tip applicator and the putty weights can be molded to be part of the car design and can be painted without issue. We are very happy with this. This kit works perfectly for our workshop Read more
These tiny weights are intended for pinewood derby cars, but I and most other model railroaders use them for weighting freight and passenger cars. This kit is great; it has proper weights, plus two clumps of weighted putty, plus a half ounce of graphite powder for lubricating the pinewood derby car axles. Model railroaders can use the graphite as dry lubricant for engine gears or to slick up the freight car wheels in the trucks. This is a good selection, but alas it is a bit pricey for what you get.
