I'm a photographer and I use multiple hard drives to back up large image files. The LaCie 2TB Porsche Design has been my choice of hard drive since it was launched. You don't need a separate power source for it - just plug the USB cord into your computer. Take a few minutes to format (you can choose 100% Mac like I do or partition it so you can use on Mac and PC). Touch wood - I haven't had one fail and I have at least 10 of these babies. Generally, these drives have served me well and all are still working, but I recently discovered a problem. They only allow files up to a certain size - perhaps 5GB. I didn't pay close attention when formatting, but remember there was a size limit. It sounded large enough to me, but later when I tried to copy some large items of 6 to 20 GB each, it wouldn't work. So now I have to purchase a different one from another company that can handle that. It doesn't make sense to me that a 2TB drive won't "accept" items larger than a few GB each. Read more

defective design - the power cord does not fit securely and consequently was constantly being ejected suddenly by my mac. The internal power pins broke and now it is impossible to repair and $500 to recover the data. Never buying LaCie again. Read more

My large movie files transferred smoothly and fast onto the drive. Comes with a 2-year limited warranty for hardware. I also bought the Seagate Rescue - 2 Year Data Recovery Plan for External Hard Drives that I hope I'll never have to use. I've had other brand name drives to fail on me in the past and it is an agonizing experience as a filmmaker. I believe in the LaCie product but it never hurts to have a backup plan. Read more
