My 2.5 year old loves Mr. Pencil! It’s helped him immensely with his ABC’s and phonetics. I love that he can sit there for an hour and loves bringing it in the car on longer trips. Also, Mr. Pencil can survive being thrown as it has been thrown multiple times. The screen brightness isn’t too bright and reminds me of a kindle. We’ve really enjoyed using the LeapFrog Mr. Pencil’s Scribble, Write and Read! I love that the pencil is connected in the middle, making it easy for both right and left-handed kids to use, super thoughtful design. The two volume levels are great for different settings, and being able to program up to three names is a fantastic feature. It’s helped my preschooler start learning how to spell and write his full name, which is a huge win. That said, I do wish there were more preprogrammed words for kids to practice spelling and pronunciation, it would really extend the product’s learning value. Also, the screen is tough to see in outdoor lighting, even on an overcast day under a shelter. A toggleable backlight would be a great addition. My great nephew loves the Mr. Pencil! He enjoys very much that it talks back to him and he thinks that it’s his friend and it is working well on teaching him. I bought him both the leapfrog leap pad and Mr. Pencil thinking he could grow into the leapfrog but get used to it by watching videos and and with playing on it and practicing but Mr. Pencil is very practical for now and very cost effective and for a 3 year old, just perfect! It’s just the right size, it’s sounds great, it’s durable and he’s a tough little guy so we needed to make sure it was and it is. It stands out as a perfect learning toy for a child because it keeps their attention, it’s bright and colorful and it talks to them and every child needs to use their imagination and this is perfect for that. They get to learn all sorts of things from an age appropriate friend and use their imagination and you really can’t ask for more than that in a wonderfully priced toy!
