I feel like though they have stretch in the waist band, the thicker band highlights the soft part of the tummy, which is not flattering. These palazzo pants are great. For work, for going out, or running errands they can be dressed up or worn casually. I got a size medium, which is my usual size, and they fit perfectly. The waistband is actually tight and cinches at the waist perfectly but is still stretchy, with a drawstring for if you need to tighten them further. The material is lightweight and flowy.
