I've tested a few dash cams in the $100 range, and the difference in video quality with the Magellan DR45 is quit amazing. The footage actually looks like real 4K and captures noticeably sharper details, especially when trying to read license plates. Installation does take some time since you need to run the cable along the trim, but it wasn't diffucult on my Rav 4 because the A-pillar panel pops off and back on fairly easily. I was worried the adhesive mount might fail in hot or cold weather, but it has stayed solid so far without any signs of loosening. It's not the cheapest dash cam available, but the build quality and the fact it was made in Taiwan may be a plus for buyers who care about cybersecurity and manufacturing origin. I had a Garmin 66w dash cam before buying the Magellan dash cam, and after using the Magellan for a couple of weeks, I can say it is a definite upgrade, not just in video quality, but also in how easy it is to use. First, of course, is the video quality. It is very good! I can make out the details such as license plates, from both the front and rear cameras. At night the glare from the headlights is still an issue, although not as much as it was with my Garmin, and the video quality is also much better. The cable to the rear cam is longer than with other dash cams I had, something to remember when you run it. And the menu is simple and straightforward, connecting to the dash cam's Wi Fi is easy, I just have to scan the QR code on the menu screen. The dash cam's GPS accurately sets the time and date, and also shows the route traveled if you decide to download the video and view it in the MiVuePro app. You can also view the video only, without the GPS route data, if you use your phone's pictures app (on the dash cam's menu screen you can choose the video recording length, 1, 3 or 5 minutes). Just be sure to first install the Magellan app, Magellan MiVuePro, to set everything up. As other reviewers noted, you can also remove the micro SD card to watch the videos. I personally download them to my phone (on the dash cam's screen, use the menu buttons to navigate to the dash cam's QR code screen to connect to Wi FI on your cell phone, open the MiVuePro app, now connect the app (again)on the app's screen on your cell phone, choose which video to download. It's easier than it sounds lol. You can also preview the videos before downloading. It asks you if you wish to download front, rear or both. A 3 minute file is about 450 mb for the front cam and 350 mb for the rear cam; both videos take about 4 minutes to download. Happy with the purchase 😀 Read more
I bought this camera with much hopes of using the Starvis 2 sensor. However when i connected all the cameras together, the rear camera did not show up on main camera screen, no matter what I did. Additionally, the power plug which goes in the car lighter socket did not have any additional USB-A port on top, so once you put it in, there's nothing else you can power up in an older car. So far the camera has worked perfectly. I still remove the SD card to put the video in my computer. I have used the Bluetooth to connect it to my phone. I didn’t like that the progress bar showed up in the middle of the video. I need to look into that a little more. But I like the mount much better than the suction cup mount I will see next summer if it stands up to the Arizona heat. Read more
I read another review that mentioned trying to set-up the app for this device. You will never find it under the name that the owner's 'pamphlet' calls it. The correct name you'll have to search for is "NAVMAN MiVue Pro". Once you find the app, installing it is NOT fun either!! Don't you manufacturing folks test out your installation guides before releasing them to the public? Geez, I am a retired electrical engineer that this wasn't easy for me. I can just imagine what a pain the butt this will be for the average non-technical person! Another reviewer stated he didn't want to have to take apart his headliner or dash to install this dash-cam. I didn't either, so I took it to my local 'car stereo' shop and paid them to install it. It cost me a wad to have it put in, but I'm almost 73 years old and don't crawl under dashboards or do overhead work well anymore. Expect about $200 to have this dash-cam professionally installed. The device is in and working properly for now, but I have only begun to determine it's finer points. I will be back with my findings as time goes on.
