As a long-time daily shaver with a safety razor, I tend to view electrics as a necessary evil, one that must occasionally be used while traveling or when pressed for time. But prior to moving to a safety razor, I put in about 10 years of daily shaving with an electric foil-type razor, so I understand what convenience it provides. This razor is on par with most electrics. It's neither stellar nor abysmal; it gets the job done efficiently, and a person could drive while shaving if needed. I currently have a caliber foil razor that I am comparing this razor with for the purpose of getting an index of quality. The caliber is considered to be one of the best professional-grade foil shavers and many barbers use them for cleanup/touchup around the neck and ears. At 3 times the price, the caliber is better, but not by as much as I would expect. It cuts cleaner and quicker, but this (pardon my brain here for filling in the missing vowels) VINTAGESHAVER brand razor does an acceptable job, plus it has a cow-catcher trim function in addition to the foil shave bar. This is pretty useful getting those hairs that grow at wild angles around the Adam's apple and on the ears for us older folks. One of the aspects of electric razors that I always verify - how noisy is it? I have had some razors that left me with ringing ears after shaving. I did test both razors - see screenshots - and found that while the VINTAGESHAVER did register 2db higher, the volume was in the less-damaging midrange. The caliber had a higher pitch, lower volume. On the whole, I would prefer the VINTAGESHAVER. I have found that when switching from blade to electric, the first shave must be thrown out. It takes one shave to 'groom' the whiskers for an electric shave. This held true; the first shave was a complete dud - I had stubble by 11AM, and my face stuck to the pillowcase like velcro that night. But the second day's shave was a whole world's difference. It held smooth to the touch almost to 5 o'clock. Day 3 was the same, but slightly quicker in shaving. Each day's shave used 14% or less of the battery, so seven shaves should be achievable on a single charge. The fact that it charges via USB-C is a huge plus. One trick I've learned with electrics - a preshave does help quite a bit, and it does not have to be a commercially sold stinkbomb like LectricShave. Any aftershave has enough oils in it to provide the minimal lubrication needed. Read more
