Solid Adventure Pants

MikeJuly 2, 2025

Convertible pants. I know--it's a line that, once crossed, cannot really be uncrossed. Generally, people who wear convertible pants fall somewhere along the spectrum of hard-core adventurer on the one end and too lazy to change into shorts on the other. I have had a pair of North Face convertible pants for a long time. They are lightweight, rugged, dry on the fly, and easy to get the lower legs on and off. They've been with me to the peaks of the Rocky Mountains to the North Shore of Lake Superior to the rainforest of Guatemala to the glaciers of Iceland. They are finally starting to fall apart in some small but annoying ways, and it was time to get a replacement/companion pair. This offering is not North Face, but it ain't bad. They are very light synthetic material that is water resistent--not waterproof. The material is lighter than my NF pair. I would worry about durability based little, but I have a pair of Columbia cargo/hiking shorts that I've had forever and they feel very similar to these pants. Look, you aren't buying these for warmth; you're buying them for cover and protection from sun, scrapes, bugs, wind. And some rain. The pocket are fair spacious and arranged like typical cargo pants. There are front thight pockets thatbzip. The front cargo pockets have velcro closures. The back pockets have no closures, which I find odd and not great. I want my stuff to be secure on the trail. Nevertheless, they all work and provide a good amount of carrying space. A plastic ring is included at the top of the right pocket to clip your keys to. Should you so desire. The leg zippers work well and come off fairly easy. Would be nice if the legs were marked left and right (like the NF ones are) to speed.up the reattached process, but you'll figure it out. More importantly, it would be nice if there were ankle zippers to make it so you could take off the legs without taking off your shoes. I can't with these and my 11.5 size feet. Again, not a huge pain, but not as convenient as it could be. Bybthe way, the legs do have adjustable elastic around the ankles for when you are wearing them. I like that feature--you can cinch them tighter to keep debris and stuff out. Sizing is pretty spot on. The pants have an elastic waistband and do not come with a belt; I added the one in the photos from a pair of shorts I tossed out. You can never have too many extra web belts--they are useful for all sorts of things. I wish the main button the pants was riveted instead of sewn on, but again, it will worked. Just be honest with yourself on size when you are ordering, or learn to carry a sewing kit with you on the trail. The bottom line is that these pants may not be as sturdy as higher end adventure pants, but they are certainly more than servicable for day hikes, picnics, and the like. They look good, the shorts aren't too short, they pack down very small, and the value for the expense is there. I may end up throwing these next to the rain jacket in the backpack I always keep in my car for unexpected adventures; I think they're just about perfect for that. Read more

excellent outdoor pants that convert to shorts whenever needed

JNJune 21, 2025

These FTAZWBD Mens convertible lightweight hiking pants (Army Green, 36) can transition into shorts whenever desired by simply unzippering them at the knees. The fabric is made of 90%nylon and 10% Spandex/elastane and is very lightweight but not at all see-through. The fabric hangs well and does not cling to the body at all which is really nice on a hot summer day. (Who wants clingy, sweaty pants on a hot summer day ?) These pants are made in the style of cargo pants; There are pockets everywhere. There are two large pockets in the rear, two large pockets at the front sides and two large cargo-style pockets - one on each thigh - which can be accessed by either a zipper or by a flap that is secured by a hook-and-loop fastener (think Velcro.) And each of those thigh pockets can accommodate a massive cellphone or possibly a small tablet even. And the front pockets have a mesh liner that will allow quick draining of any water. And if the legs are zipped off to turn the pants into shorts, no pockets are sacrificed since all the pockets remain with the shorts. Another nice thing about these pants is that they have an ability to cinch up the bottom of the pants legs. So if you are wandering in snake country and don’t want a rattlesnake to crawl up your leg, a nicely cinched up pants-leg bottom should help prevent that. The sizing chart seems accurate. I generally wear waist size 36 inches and ordered size 36. The waist is quite comfortable and might even accommodate a person with a 38 inch waist. But the size 36 had enough elastic in the waist to keep the pants from falling down too badly when wearing them without a belt. (Cellphones are heavy now-a-days and gravity RULES.) But from now on i’m only going to be wearing these pants with a belt because with a heavy cellphone in the pocket they do tend to work their way slowly downwards - exposing whatever might be underneath the shorts (These pants have nice, broad belt-loops so no worries with the pants accepting a nice, healthy, wide belt.) The laundering instructions for this (“Great Wall grid”) fabric are to wash in cold water (max 30°C/86°F), line dry, do not chlorine bleach and if ironed - use an iron no hotter than 110°C/230°F. Line drying these pants should take mere minutes with as fast as this fabric should be dry. I expect to be wearing these pants a lot this summer - but probably almost 100% in shorts-mode - at least till the temperature drops back down into the 80°F’s again. These pants are rugged, lightweight, and they have enough pockets for anything i need to be a-carrying. What could be better ? Read more

Great so far

Jacob SchulzAugust 13, 2025

These have held up well in some pretty difficult environments for me so far. I wore them to a construction site, and even with near constant rubbing on joists and other rough wooden surfaces, they had only minor superficial snags and threads. Additionally, the zippers around the knees allowed for easy venting on the hotter days, though I was loathe to unzip them all the way into shorts because it would be a pain to then reconvert them into pants. The pockets are very well arranged, and I've found them all quite useful, but I do have to take off a star for the quality of the velcro pads that hold the pockets shut. The one on my right leg has already ripped through its stitching and is now hanging on by a thread, leaving that pocket lid unfastenable. That does leave me with questions about the quality of the rest of the product, but it has at least held up so far. I will update this review if that changes. They're comfortable and well in line with other brands in terms of weight, so no complaints there. Read more
