Part of the light on the top of the bar shines upwards that reflects off the ceiling to cast soft diffuse illumination around the room as well. The light isn't quite as bright as I expected, but it's overall a 5 star purchase. The wire length adjusters are pretty trick too (read the directions before yanking on them). Easier to install with two people (one to twist on the wire-nuts while the other to hold up the fixture before mounting) but can be done with one and a tall ladder. Read more
