A quality OBDII reader and a LOT more WITH LIFE TIME UPDATES! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

SeeratlasFebruary 9, 2026

Ok, I might ruffle a few feathers here, but I'm an old guy who's been fooling around with cars ,trucks for an awful long time, in fact I remember the first day. My dad was servicing his shiny new Packard, while I was watching him working, a question came to my mind, I think I was 3, maybe 4. The question?: " i know you put gas in the tank, but how does that end up making the car move?" I've never forgotten the look on his face when he turned and stared a me with his mouth hanging open:) He then smiled, started the car, then took me around back and had me put my hand by the exhaust, explaining: "The gas is burned inside the engine which makes the cool air become very hot, making it expand like a balloon. As the 'balloons' git bigger they push against pieces of steel making them move and turn gears which eventually force the wheels to turn. A car is therefore mostly a hot air pump. Do you feel the hot air coming out of that pipe?" It was that at that moment, he decided that one day, I'd study engineering, not to necessarily make me become one, but as he put it, "to learn how to think." I tell you that story, not only because I'm old now, and that's what old guys do *wink*, its because 'getting a third opinion" when you taking your car/truck etc. into a mechanic to get something fixed, or even worse, 'diagnosed' has become an incredibly hazardous undertaking as society has changed, and evidence of the automotive industry's moral's seem increasingly hard to find. I'm not saying there aren't exceptions, but they are few and far between. I could tell you stories, some coming from the top of the industry :( Consequently, purchasing a diagnosing code reader can be one of the most cost effective devices one can acquire. I hate to say it, but ESPECIALLY if you're a woman. Knowledge is POWER, especially when confronting the vehicle repair industry. That is where this MOTOPOWER reader REALLY comes into it's own. One use can more than pay for the entire unit in savings against repair scams, outright misinformation ("lying") etc., especially when traveling, where they assume they're not likely to ever see you or your vehicle again. This particular meter far exceeds a standard OBDII code reader, offering some very useful additional capabilities that might require you to spend a little time online learning, but rest assured, the return on that effort will most likely be one of the biggest "bang for buck" investments of your life, - both as to time invested, and money spent on this MOTOPOWER unit. Plus, it's compatible with a whole range of vehicles, specifically the above-referenced OBDII, which basically means Vehicles for 2000 on up (but, it may also work with some vehicles going back to 1995 or so). The reader also has a free lifetime update availability by simply downloading the upgrades from the website. Frankly, the more you learn, the more you're going to want to learn MORE LOL. It's Highly visible screen, ability to download diagnostics to your phone, this little reader can do an awful lot to help you avoid, the dreaded 'red light' on the dask syndrome. I give it 5 stars across the board. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.! Read more

Nice And Compact

RyanMarch 25, 2026

I already had a Bluetooth OBD2 scanner and any number of apps that you can use with it (Torque paid, etc), as well as a Snap-On scanner. The MOTOPOWER OBD2 scanner is a great middle ground. You can easily go overboard with the phone apps and the Snap-On is really complicated to get started with (and much more expensive). I was looking at used cars, and this easily fits in my pocket, so that I could quickly pull it out and get an immediate scan. And since I was looking at unknown cars, I also took my Snap-On as a "confirmer." Neither had an discrepancies. So far, I have not gotten any codes, so I cannot give a comment on that portion of accuracy, just that both it and the Snap-On did not find any codes on any of the Subarus and Toyotas I tried it on. I did not test the Oil Reset, but next time I change oil, I will give it a shot; versus doing the magic steps to clear it. I also want to mention that the screen is in full color and really easy to read, both in sunlight and shade. Read more

A bit pricey

Bradley PaoliFebruary 26, 2026

Pros: It doesn't feel flimsy or cheaply built. It has some unique features like performance testing that are nice to have. The screen quality is pretty good. It doesn't need batteries or anything like that. It's pretty quick and doesn't lag at all so it has a decent chip in it. Cons: I wish the buttons had some sort of illumination. I've used it in the dark and the buttons are unreadable. The live data feed doesn't write out the full meaning of the words for each parameter and leaves it abbreviated, which is annoying. The build quality isn't bad but the materials could be nicer for the price. Read more

A Must Have for Modern DIY Car Maintenance

J. S.February 24, 2026

This OBDII code scanner expands on the basics and is a great addition to any toolbox if you maintain your own modern vehicle. The build quality is excellent and feels tough and sturdy in the hand. The cable is a fairly large gauge adding to the robust feeling of the overall device. The buttons feel great to operate, not even a hint of feeling like they'll stop working long before the device dies. The screen is bright and easy to read even in bright light, a must if you're working outside. The included bag was a nice touch as I, personally, will need to refer to the manual every so often as I only maintain my vehicles and fix things as needed and am not working with it daily. Having the good sized bag to keep the everything in will ensure I never have to search online for the manual. The scanner has a USBC port for lifetime software updates (very important) and also has the ability to send diagnostic reports to your phone or print them by connecting to a PC. All updates and features are not locked behind a subscription in any way (a big plus for anything tech related these days). It can also give you some fun numbers like your 0-60 as well as turn off your oil maintenance reminder light (as some manufacturers like to make the process of resetting them a bit cryptic). Personally, I love the ability to test your battery as I live in a cold climate and every winter or two I have to figure out if my batteries are toast or if the cold is just enough to make cranking a struggle and a trickle charger will do the trick until it warms back up. Given all the features, I think for $99.99 (at the time of this writing) this scanner is a great value. Read more

Good but not great.

Trevor Stevens, Steven's CorporationFebruary 22, 2026

Good for basics, not a lot of live data support. I think for a advance hobbyist this would be the way to go. There are functions that are really not that useful but overall its a decent product. Decent price as well. Read more
