This oral sensory kit is very useful and has helped my child with tongue muscle exercises and chewing practice. The three interchangeable soft massage heads are well designed to meet different oral sensory needs, and the gentle vibration is soothing. After using it, I’ve noticed that my child’s tongue flexibility has improved, along with better control over chewing and swallowing, and clearer speech. I'll be frank -- when I ordered this "calming oral sensory kit," I really wasn't entirely sure what it was because the information on the product page didn't make it clear precisely what its purpose is and included very few details (that's still the case at the time of this review). I've seen things like breathing therapy necklaces, which are designed for relaxation and breathing training, so I thought this might serve a similar purpose. I also noticed that the little bit of language included mentioned gentle vibrations, so based on that and the $19 retail price, I figured this was likely battery-powered. All I knew for certain is that it was filed under Oral Care - Breath Fresheners (it is definitely not a breath freshener). Later, Amazon suggested related items that were in the infant care category, so it is possibly intended for that use, but the instructions say to kerp this away from children. Based on what the product page said, though, and the fact that I often benefit from sensory/fidget tools, I thought I'd check it out. Now that I have it...well, I'm still not entirely certain who the target group is, but I did try all the pieces myself and can speak to their performance. First, let me say that this is NOT battery-powered. It is completely manual: the dark gray part of the handle is squeezed to create suction when used with the piece that aligns with the tongue (the gray part functions much like the squeeze bulb on a turkey baster). The suction is VERY strong on me, an adult. There are two other pieces listed as an item to bite down on and another listed as a tongue depressor: one that fits into the other side of the gray piece (I tried it on both sides, and it didn't create anything like a vibration), and another piece that is a standalone brush-like piece. The textures of these other two pieces do create pleasant sensations when manually brushed along the tongue and inside of the mouth (far more pleasant than the suction is), but they are just textured pieces of plastic. There are training exercises included in the insert that seem to be more for strengthening than sensory stimulation. Of course, this kit does create sensory stimulation (though the suction wasn't pleasant due to its intensity), but based on the fact that this is just a set of basic plastic pieces and a squeeze bulb, it seems over-priced and doesn't create some of the sensations suggested by the title language at the time of this review. It might serve some valuable purpose for someone, but the overall build doesn't suggest high value for the price and there are a lot of cheap items that can create similar sensations and provide at least some of the same strengthening. Like others have pointed out it’s sort of unclear who exactly this tool is for. This package does come with some instructions on how to do a few individual exercises, but it leaves much to be desired. Having recently done myofunctional therapy (mouth and tongue strengthening) myself I thought this could be useful. The only one of these tools that might be useful is the suction tool which you can suction to your tongue and then perform exercises, which will hopefully strengthen your tongue. There’s another tool that is a bite stick that appears to be for people (children) who have a weak bite. You bite and pull on it. And then there’s another tool that is basically just a tongue depressor. I do not know why this listing suggests that this item vibrates and I don’t know why anybody else who reviewed this said that it does… I could not get anything to even come close to vibrating… it is a 100% manual tool. No batteries. The only thing it really does is suction and that’s just the one tool. Not sure I’d recommend it unless you are absolutely sure this set is what you are looking for. Read more
I tried this oral sensory kit mainly out of curiosity and because it looked quite simple to use. The vibration is very light, and the different heads have soft textures, which might be good for people looking for basic sensory tools. It doesn’t feel harsh or too intense, which is probably the point. The design seems clean and easy to hold. One of the heads felt a bit firmer than I expected, but it still works fine depending on how you use it. The parts are easy to swap, though one felt slightly loose after attaching, but nothing that made it unusable. It’s not something I’d say everyone needs, but for certain situations, this might be helpful. Definately not a miracle tool, but seems to serve its small purpose decently. Read more
I got this for a friend with dysphasia, but we couldn't understand its very simple instructions. Specifically, they did not provide any details about the exercises, and what they suggested had no effect, as far as we could tell. Not that we needed it for an elderly person, but they claim that there is a teddy bear attachment, and there was none. It's essentially a suction bulb, cheaply made, and perhaps, under the guidance of a good physical therapist, it has value. However, if you're trying to use it independently without help from a PT, I don't see much value in this product. Read more
