I started using this mother’s wash as soon as I got home from the hospital, and it’s been amazing. It’s gentle enough for intimate areas but works beautifully as an all-over body wash too. My skin stays soft, clean, and comfortable without any irritation or dryness. I love that it’s mild and not overly scented, especially during postpartum when your skin can be extra sensitive. This very low foam wash has a pH that is optimized for the nether regions. Using a high pH cleanser can be harsh, and in those more susceptible to issues, can throw off the pH balance, which can lead to problems. Another reviewer found this to have a medicinal scent, which could come from the tea tree leaf oil. I tested the scent on my hands. To me, it has more of a spicy note with floral undertones. The scent is light, and although it lingers for a little while, it became undetectable after a reasonable amount of time and didn't cause me to sneeze, which is the case with many products. I checked to see what ingredients contributed to the scent. It has tea tree oil, and most know that can have a medicinal scent. I think I was picking up the Szechuan pepper scent more, though, and also the benzyl alcohol, which functions as a preservative but also has a sweet floral note. The product info claims the scent is from the chamomile, but chamomile is really mild and at least to my nose, is a faint under-note at most compared to the Szechuan pepper and benzyl alcohol (maybe I am just better at picking out those notes). As for ingredients, this gets a 45/100 on Yuka and a 4 on EWG, neither of which are really great. Yuka doesn't like Ammonium lauryl sulfate and considers it irritating, but EWG rates it as a 1, which is the best rating! I mention that just to show you always need to evaluate those ratings with a grain of salt. Yuka notes that it is safe when it will be quickly rinsed off, as is the case with this cleanser. Both Yuka and EWG note that cocamidopropyl betaine and benzyl alcohol can cause allergies/irritation. Yuka likes the rest of the ingredients, but EWG notes that tea tree oil can be irritating. EWG also penalizes lactic acid, which is irritating depending on concentration. Lactic acid is a gentle chemical exfoliant when used at appropriate concentrations; in this product it's at a very low concentration. The vast majority (>90%) of people will not react to cocamidopropyl betaine, but those prone to certain skin conditions might want to use this more cautiously. I'd also avoid this if you have allergies/reactions to tea tree oil. I would rather a product marketed to the pregnant and postpartem skip ingredients that could cause problems even in a relatively small number of people. I decided this one was not for me. It went on nicely at first, but then I found it too stripping, so I will go back to my original soap. The liquid is clear and it foamed immediately and well. The smell is very muted, which I appreciated because I can be sensitive to scents, and this one was fine. I had high hopes because it is supposed to be gentle, moisturizing, and made for delicate skin. It is also pH balanced and free from parabens which I liked. I also liked that the expiration date was more than two years away and the price seemed decent. It just did not work for my skin the way I expected. Overall it seems like a thoughtful product for people who need something gentle during pregnancy or postpartum, but it was too stripping for me personally. Read more
