I can't say this is REALLY gentle, however, that is because the blades are metal. So, just have to go slow and be thorough while brushing your animal. I have two Maine Coons and two Shih Tzus (which is why I purchased this). Both of the cats do shed (though not profusely) and I'd like to stay ahead of the "shedding" game with them. As for the Shih Tzus, sometimes the mats are easily made in their tails and on the rumps. With this, it made it easy to get the mats out and I was also able to get extra hair out that I wouldn't have expected (they don't really shed). I have tried many grooming combs in my life with several long hair dogs. This one is fantastic! I have two long hair Collies and two very full coated Shelties. I tried it first on the Sheltie. It felt good in my hand and boy does it work! I never got so much undercoat out of a dog and so easily. I like that the hair comes of the comb so easily because many of them do not. I got a full bag of hair from him and he lay there calmly while I did it. He was not the least bothered by the rake brush. Now he looks so sleek and pretty. Great price for this one.
