This is a great, fully automatic espresso, coffee and cappuccino maker. Very easy to use and it makes great coffee drinks. The bean compartment could be a bit larger, but that's the only criticism I can come up with. It works as well as many of the much more expensive machines out there, great value for money. Read more

I have been shopping for this type of coffee maker for some time (sick of k-cups). I initially bought a much more expensive brand but returned it (to complicated to clean etc.). This coffee maker is excellent. Was so easy to set up and Coffee tastes great. Cappuccino feature is so convenient and produces great froth. I guess the only negative is the size of the water tank and that it pushes out water into the collection tray with every self cleaning. I just keep a small glass bowel to remedy it. A friend recommended a Phillips 5400 to me. I didn’t need a lot of those features, so I scaled down a bit. The Phillips 2200 makes good coffee. That’s about as much as I need to say about that. I’ve been using pods for years, but now I am free. The water reservoir is painfully small, and the waste bin fills quickly. An awful lot of water ends up in the waste tray. These two negatives are not a big deal. I suspect that even higher price machines have the same issues. The packaging is very thorough, which was a bit annoying but also reassuring. Outside of beating on the box with a hammer, this machine should arrive in good condition. 4 stars. If the longevity claims are correct, I’ll be buying a new coffee maker in about 18 years. If it really does last that long, the next one will be Phillips as well. Now, that’s where my original review ended. That was within a few days of originally receiving this machine. Since then, the machine has started making odd noises and behaving strangely. Last night I cleaned the brew group and troubleshot issues for a few hours. Nothing seemed to help; the machine was only making a few drops of coffee at a time. I finally had the time to dig deeper today. On a Phillips support site, I finally found my answer. I thought there was no way it was such an easy fix, but I was wrong. My problem was the filter, and removing it instantly fixed my issue. Don’t fret! Seven years ago, we purchased a Philips Saeco and absolutely loved it. So when it came time to replace our coffee maker—due only to a move abroad and a change in voltage—it felt natural to choose another Philips: the 2200 Series Fully Automatic Espresso Machine. Our original unit was still working perfectly, and we would have kept it if not for the electrical incompatibility. Unfortunately, this new model has been a disappointment from the start. The ground coffee compartment is unreliable, functioning sporadically and seemingly on its own terms. But the most frustrating issue is the water compartment. Unless it’s firmly pressed into place—not just snapped in—it leaks. And when it leaks, it’s a mess. The cabinet we placed it on is slowly deteriorating. I even added a plastic barrier underneath, but when the machine decides to leak, it soaks the cabinet and the floor. It’s disheartening to look at a coffee maker that was meant to bring daily joy but instead causes stress. We haven’t replaced it yet because it’s only a year old and was a significant investment. Still, we deeply regret this purchase. We expected reliability and joy from a trusted brand, but this experience has left us disappointed—and cautious about choosing Philips again. Read more

The machine looks very nice, professional and everything. I was excited to get it. Then I made coffee with it and it was just bad. I thought, I need to practice more, so I tried different coffee beans, different settings, but still... The regular coffee that comes out of this thing is what my French mother would have called "dirty socks juice". Really, just brown water, even at the highest strength setting and with a very dark roast bean. The espressos were barely okay, without much crema. The cappuccino was good, but basically any mediocre coffee will taste good with great frothed milk (that part worked well!) and sugar. I won't even discuss the various weird behaviors of the machine pouring water at the end or at the beginning of a cycle, and warning you about all sorts of issues, except when the beans run out and you get water. Finally, I started reading about all sorts of technical issues people have after a few months and the poor support from Philipps. Definitely not worth the $649 price it commands, and not even the $450 with typical discounts. I returned it after 2 weeks, and really trying to like it. My $25 French press makes way better coffee, so does my nespresso Vertuo when I am in a hurry. I decided to buy a manual espresso machine and a good burr grinder for less than half the price, we'll see if I'm happier with that choice. Read more

This machine makes a decent cup of coffee for its price point, but the long-term ownership experience is what brings my rating down to three stars. The main issue is the required maintenance. Cleaning the brew unit is a messy, frustrating, and frequent task that completely undermines the convenience of an "automatic" machine. Honestly, the hassle and mess of the upkeep are so significant that it makes me wish I had just spent the extra thousand dollars on a Jura. If you're considering this machine, be prepared for a tedious cleaning routine. For me, the frustration almost outweighs the benefit. Read more
