Worth watching if you don’t mind the excessive gratutous sex.

This is a somewhat period setting in the 20s I suppose. The sets are quite impressive yet over time these things become weary to me perhaps. It’s goes from one place around the world by steam ships and so on, with surreal nautical scenes and French art nouveau. One may wonder all the efforts that went into just the sets which gets kind of mind numbing, yet still amazing. The story is good yet the acting and the scripts are even better. The way the protagonist played by Emma Stone, views her experiences is refreshing and awesomely, fiercely independent, and original.. even as she decides that sex is what it is after being exhausted to a point few movies will go. Definitely different. Willam Defoe is also very good like he usually is and mostly does not disappoint. Not an easy character to play I would guess. Overall worth it! That is unless one has a problem with all the sex. It’s a bit much yet did not detract enough for me to make it a problem seeing the movie for what it was worth: funny, whimsical, and with interesting characters. Read more

Great film. Not for everyone. Some of this director's stuff is a little too harsh with animal abuse but I love Mark Ruffalo and Emma gives an amazing performance Read more

Straight Up Pornography with a Plot from the Mind of a High School Deviant

MK DanaherOctober 13, 2024✓ Verified purchase

First, DO NOT LET YOUR KIDS ANYWHERE NEAR THIS MOVIE. I think this could very well be the worst movie I have ever seen. I don't know which is worse: the fact that I put myself through wasting time on the cringe - hoping it would take a turn for the better - or losing all respect for Emma Stone - until now, one of my favorite actresses. I just can never look at her acting with admiration any longer. Not because she isn't a good actress, but because now when I see her, I won't be able to rinse the upwards of 20 extremely graphic and prolonged sex scenes she performed in every position from my brain. Not to mention the multiple masturbation scenes and full frontal both men and Stone. She sold her soul in this one. She has ceased being a class-act. She has cheapened herself. It's tragic in my opinion. That wasn't art. It was straight up pornography mixed with bizarre. I am stunned Emma Stone took on this role. No wonder Hollywood critics loved this "film." No wonder Emma Stone won "best actress." It's everything Hollywood has become. It's a horrible shame that Emma Stone has defiled herself to the cheers of a vile and classless Hollywood. I understand the high critics' scores - but the high audience scores? That's pretty depressing if it's a measure of our culture. And the plot...It easily comes from the mind of a maladjusted 17-year-old boy. I don't know if the novel was so twisted and graphic, but I would not be surprised if, in the future, we find out the writer and director are accused of very inappropriate behavior. Read more

Best for adults

This movie is very well acted by the cast although it is a bit quirky. Not for young children as it has lots of nudity and complex topics. It is a fun new take on Frankenstein. Read more

Very Strange Movie But Who doesn't like Strange Films?

Perry AldridgeFebruary 12, 2026✓ Verified purchase

I like the long hair, the clothing, the time period the film is in. Emma has proved that she will do nearly anything in Films. She looks so beautiful as Bella. A film I would recommend to Goth people, to people who like Strange Films. Willam DaFoe does a great job in this Film. I haven't finished "Poor Things" yet, but I am beyond satisfied. Very Bizarre, and Strange Films interest me. I think many people should buy this movie, but do not watch it with young kids in the room. Lots of Nudity, and acts of Sex. So for mature audiences. My DVD plays fine. I'm well satisfied! Give it a chance!! Read more

Strangest, Well Acted and Interesting Story EVER

L. BegginsJuly 2, 2024✓ Verified purchase

Is it bordering on porn or were there just so many, lengthy sex scenes that it felt like porn? As a woman am I supposed to feel empowered by the "heroine's" sexual exploration (from Milan to Minsk)? The movie felt "overdone" during that particular phase, and the adage about beating a dead horse comes to mind. I'm not sure because I nodded off during sex scenes, mind you (i.e. enough of it to become entirely bored); but I think they may have jumped the shark. Defoe was amazing and totally inhabited his role. Same must be said for Emma and Rufalo as well as supporting actors. Interesting story line, premise, etc., just seemed to veer off course. If that was meant to be the course they should have spared us the interesting part though. I can't say I hated it and in fact there is much to appreciate. But don't think it's appropriate for young minds! Read more

One of My Top 3 Favorite Movies of All Time

TJ BurnzleyJune 16, 2024✓ Verified purchase

I am a movie goer, a film enthusiast--Tarentino could be a brother from a different mother. Poor Things is everything I want in a great film: great acting, superb script, stunning cinematography, and an original approach to the project. Is this movie for everybody? Certainly not, but I would say the same of The Fall by Tarsem Singh and Cloud Atlas by Tom Tykwer and the Wachowski sisters. Emma Stone is simply amazing, as are Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe. Production design, coupled with the Victorian era backdrop, exceeds "fantastic." Poor Things is truly a feast for the eyes. My only criticism is that the nudity, while necessary to the story told, is too much. Tighter shots would have made the points intended. The sex depicted, however, needs no further editing because... ...for me, Bella's evolution is physical, emotional, political, and "empirical." We watch her progress from a tantrum throwing toddler to a medical student, from an egotistical brat to an empathetic "matriarch", from a scientific experiment to a fully formed and fully functioning human being, a woman of character, intelligence and deterimination. Let me also state that I like action movies (the Mission Impossible series), sci fi movies (Alien, Predator, Star Wars series), and westerns (The Searchers, Good Bad Ugly, True Grit). But, as satisfying as those genres are, films like Poor Things raise the bar of cinematic art, and I'm very happy for that. Read more
