Out of the box set up is super easy. Quick start guide covers everything you need to get started. For the past few months I have been looking for solutions to transfer Mini DV videos to MP4 format from a Panasonic camcorder to my MacBook Air as the original methods are not compatible with newer computers. This device does the conversion and saves it to a flash drive that can then be used to upload to your computer. Super happy with my purchase. This is exactly what I needed to transfer some old home VHS, Hi-8, and Digital 8 tapes to digital files. I gave it 4 stars simply because you can't pause the video being recorded during the process without it making a separate file AND I believe I was sent a used device. It was obvious the transfer wires had been re-twisted along with the power supply wire and there were blank video files and blank pictures already on the USB drive. The converter itself was very loosely wrapped with the protective plastic and it was positioned face down in the box. There was no other clear wrapping on the outside of the box sleeve. The double layer factory screen protector was still fully intact. The unit works fine and so far I have had no issues with it's functionality with the exception of not being able to just simply pause the video during recording. I guess it is possible the files came from testing at the factory and this might have been the way it was packaged but it just didn't look like it had been factory packaged. With all that being said I am happy with this device so far. You can spend more money on newer more elaborate converters that do more but at the end of the day I just wanted all the content on my home made tapes transferred before they deteriorated or became damaged. I will now be able to take these digital files and edit them, create DVD's or whatever I like. Read more

So far, so good. Hope I don't jinx it now. As of today, we have recorded over 25 hours of VHS tapes from 1988 to 1998 onto a thumb drive that came with it which we took to our first daughter yesterday. Today, we begin recording tapes of our second daughter. The Portta is easy to set up and use and so far is working very well. We will be giving it a workout as we are probably only about 10-15% of our project complete. Read more
